Psychological Preparedness under Security Threats and Uncertainties

The current regional climate has increased the possibility of collective anxiety that most residents in the Gulf region find unfamiliar. While the nation (U AE) remains a benchmark for safety and efficiency, it is important to maintain a healthy level of psychological preparedness that helps us function effectively despite external stressors.
As a psychologist practicing in Dubai for over 30 years, I wish to give a few tips ( Mental Moats)
1. Alertness as a response to stress is natural. It helps us take necessary safety measures. But keeping our mental system in a "high alert" state by continuoulsly watching too much news and social media posts is not desirable, because it will mske our mind focused on the "threat". We should rather learn to disengage from such thoughts. Instead of asking " What if something happens?" we should be thinking "what can I control right now?" This shift in perspective will help the brain move away from being fixated in negative thoughts.
2. Maintain Information Hygiene : Avoid "Digital Infodemic" - thst is over- exposure to graphic imagery or speculative social media posts that could increase your anxiety.
3. Rely on authentic information. Follow the Government's official advisory and recommended resources.
4. Maintain "news-free zones" and times, especially 1 or 2 hours before sleeping.
5 . Strengthen Family Units by maintaining mutual support and feeling of safety. Stay connected withthe community and your support system.
6. Prepare remedial scripts to replace anxiety arousing thoughts. For example, keep repeating statements like "I am currently safe. I am in a country with advanced protection." Such self-talks will help reduce the anxiety levels.
