I share my experience with trauma from the Kuwait invasion and how my body developed an involuntary stress response to scary sounds. I explain how stress hormones can be more harmful than the actual threat, and demonstrate a simple three-step breathing exercise to help retrain the body’s fear response. By closing our eyes, taking deep breaths while imagining safety washing over us, we can teach our body that it’s truly safe, even when our mind knows the reality.
