β¨ swipe to read my whole post β¨
I came to Dar es Salaam to teach.
To share what I know about birth, bodies, movement, waterbirth and supporting women.
But somewhere along the way, I realised I was doing a whole lot of learning too...
Here's what I learnt from this one birth class organized by Audentia Birth Center in Tanzania πΉπΏ
1. Women WANT to learn
There was something about the way these women listened.
The questions. The notes. The curiosity.
You could genuinely feel how much they wanted to learn and how much they valued the knowledge being shared...
2. Knowledge is a privilege
Their eagerness reminded me what a privilege it is to hold knowledge... and what a responsibility it is to share it.
Especially when that knowledge can change the way a woman experiences birth.
3. You don't need confidence to be willing
Some of the women definitely looked at me like π when we first got them moving, trying different labour positions and experiencing rebozo sifting. π
But they did it anyway :)
There was hesitation.
And thenβ¦ βOkay, let's try.β
They moved. They laughed. They got involved..
A little reminder that growth doesn't always start with confidence. Sometimes it simply starts with willingness.
4. Birth work doesn't need competition
Something else I noticed here was COMMUNITY.
Birth workers from different spaces coming together to learn, share and support each other.
More of this, please! ππ½
There was no feeling of βthis is my territory.β
No gatekeeping.
Just a shared question:
How can we make birth better for women here? π€
5. Teamwork is everything
Watching the Audentia team behind the scenes taught me just as much as what happened inside the classroom...
Everyone had a role. Everyone knew what needed doing. It was beautiful to witness and I loved each and every midwife and team member there! π₯°β¨
When a team flows, you feel it
People stepped in for each other.
Things flowed.
There was no need for one person to be everywhere doing everything .. because everyone understood that they were part of something bigger.
Agnes Ndunguru ,Registered Midwife ,Pregnancy, waterbirth Africa definitely got it right! ππ½β¨ππ½
A lesson I'm taking with me...
