The struggle people are having with the sense of uncertainty is very valid today. So much is unpredictable, so much feels unknown. And there is a lot of insecurity. There are a lot of reminders of how moments of safety concerns may trigger our survival system and the role of Fight/Flight/Freeze in the experience of dysregulation as we are trying to adapt and cope with the current regional crisis.
But it's important to remember that not everything is about Fight/Flight/Freeze.
There are different ways that we can take care of ourselves and help ourselves cope as we navigate the current situation and make it through. One is to be intentional and mindful about Predictable activities and tasks in our day.
Be present with what you do know for certain:
- I am going to do this task,
- at this time
- in this location
- with this person.
One of the automatic processes that the brain engages in is “Predictive Processing"". When so much is no longer predictable, this can add to the mental load and exhaustion. By being intentional with including in the day predictable activities, and staying present with those activities, we can help support our system to feel more grounded.
So for today, what predictable tasks or activities are you going to include in your day?
Remember, keep it simple, and let these tasks be what help anchor you throughout the day.
Steady together,
