How are the nasal polyps treated?

Treatment will depend on your symptoms, age, and general health. It will also depend on how severe the condition is and the size of the polyps.

Usually, treatment will aim to reduce inflammation and the size of your polyps.

Normally, treatment will aim to reduce inflammation and the size of your polyps. We often start treatment with steroid medications breathed in (inhaled) through the nose. These medicines can decrease the inflammation at the root of the problem. However, people who do not respond to this might need steroid medicines taken by mouth

What Are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are soft, painless, tear-shaped growths inside your nose or sinuses. They can resemble tiny clusters of grapes and may block your nasal passages as they grow.

These noncancerous growths often appear on both sides of the nose and can cause swelling, irritation, and difficulty breathing.

What Increases Your Risk?
Chronic nasal inflammation, recurring infections, allergies, or asthma make nasal polyps more likely to develop.

Nasal polyps can cause nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, loss of smell, and sinus infections. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, don't ignore them!

Rhinosinusitis is a remarkable and rather common ailment. Rhinosinusitis is usually manifested by nasal and sinuses’ inflammation although the patients can show two or more other symptoms including: Nose congestion, nasal discharge (anterior/ posterior), pain or pressure in the face and complete loss or reduced sense of smell.
In patients with Rhinosinusitis endoscopy and computerized tomography (CT scan) display mucosal changes.
In order to treat chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps nasal saline irrigation, intranasal corticosteroid sprays and macrolide antibiotics are used to wash away the irritants.
While in the case of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps intranasal corticosteroid sprays, systemic corticosteroids and local steroid nasal wash have a good prospect.
In some cases, after using systemic corticosteroids Sinus Surgery is advised for the full treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

- The Role of Family History in Allergic Diseases -

Allergic diseases often run in families, with many patients reporting a close relative who also experiences allergies. Parents with allergies frequently inquire about the likelihood of their children developing similar conditions and the specific types of allergies they might face.

Statistics show that children with one atopic (allergy-prone) parent have a 50% chance of developing allergic disorders, a significant probability. If both parents have allergies, the likelihood rises to 66%.

Research further suggests that members of an atopic family often share the same type of allergic condition. For example, if one or both parents suffer from allergic rhinitis, their children are more likely to develop allergies, particularly allergic rhinitis.

Understanding this connection helps families better prepare and manage allergic conditions early.
