Pause Before You Decide: The Impact of Strong Emotions on Decision-Making

Strong emotions, like anger or frustration, can cloud our judgement and lead to decisions we might later regret. For example, when a child doesn’t respond as we hoped to a thoughtful experience we planned, we might feel tempted to say, “I’m never doing this again!”

But here’s the truth: decisions made in the heat of emotion are often reactive, not reflective. Instead, the job is to pause, allow the emotion to settle, and revisit the decision when you’re calm. This approach helps us make choices that align with our values and long-term goals.

Next time you feel overwhelmed, try this:
1️⃣ Take a deep breath and step away from the situation.
2️⃣ Acknowledge your feelings without judgment.
3️⃣ Revisit the decision when you feel calm and clear-headed.

Remember, calm minds make better decisions.

Words to Heal: Self-Talk for When You're Feeling Hurt

When someone’s behaviour leaves you feeling hurt, remember to speak to yourself with kindness and compassion.
Here are three examples of loving self-talk to remind yourself of your worth:
✨ I am loved.
✨ I am important.
✨ I am worth knowing.

These gentle reminders can help you reconnect with your inner strength and remind you that your value is not defined by others' actions. Take a deep breath, repeat these words to yourself, and let them guide you toward feeling better.

Struggling with overthinking at night? Here’s a simple yet powerful tip: write it down.

When your mind starts racing, grab a notebook and jot down your thoughts. It doesn’t have to be neat or make sense—just let it flow. Writing helps your brain feel like the issue is being handled, calming your nervous system and interrupting the overthinking spiral.

Remember: Overthinking at night is natural. Be kind to yourself and try this technique to ease your mind.

Did you know? At night, your brain’s prefrontal cortex (responsible for logic) slows down, while emotional regions like the amygdala stay active. This is why emotions feel more intense and overthinking spirals can take over.

Research shows that people who ruminate more tend to have fragmented sleep. But don’t worry—this is your brain’s way of processing unresolved emotions.

Psychologists Tip: Writing down your thoughts before bed can help calm your mind and signal to your brain that the issue is being addressed.

Ever find yourself lying awake at night, replaying every awkward moment or unresolved thought? You’re not alone!

This midnight mental spiral, known as unfinished emotional processing, happens because your brain finally has the quiet time to process emotions you ignored during the day.

During the day, we’re busy with tasks and distractions, but at night, when the world quiets down, unresolved emotions rise to the surface. It’s not just you being dramatic—it’s how the brain works!

Tip: Acknowledge your thoughts and remind yourself that it’s okay to revisit them tomorrow when your logical brain is back online.
