“Psychologically healthy” doesn’t mean never getting angry or upset, or always knowing what to say.
It’s being able to:
1️⃣ Notice:
“I’m getting overwhelmed.”
2️⃣ Regulate.
“I need a minute.”
3️⃣ Repair.
“I got that wrong. I’m sorry.”
4️⃣ Reconnect.
“Let’s try again.”
We don’t need perfect parents.
We all need parents who can manage their own feelings, who know that mistakes can be repaired, and who can model that relationships can survive disconnection.
That’s emotional strength. And it can be learned.
Here’s to all the dads in therapy, learning what might have never been modeled to them.
