⭐4 GUT HEALTHY PROTEIN & FIBRE RICH BREAKFAST IDEAS ⭐

Everywhere I turn I hear people banging on about protein and how important it is for good health and how we need more. However, the majority of Australian's already consume more than adequate amounts of protein without even trying!!!

Protein is a key macronutrient that we need in our diet to thrive however, what really frustrates me is that very few people are talking about the importance of PROTEIN SOURCE!

Protein not only comes from animal sources e.g., meat, fish, dairy, eggs. It is also FOUND IN ALL PLANT FOODS to varying degrees including fruits (to a lesser extent), vegetables, whole grains, legumes (including tofu), nuts and seeds.

Unfortunately, when people are told they need to increase protein, they often reach for animal sources and research shows that for optimal long-term health benefits (not just short-term gains), we need to be getting the MAJORITY of our PROTEIN FROM PLANT sources!

When we reach for more protein from animal sources, we may inadvertently reduce our FIBRE intake, and this is a nutrient that the majority of Australian's fall short on! Animal protein contains ZERO fibre so this is not great for gut health, our beneficial gut microbes requiring adequate fibre to thrive and in turn support our health.

So, instead of reaching for steak (I heard this suggested by a nutritionist on a podcast recently 😫) or eggs for breakfast, why not consider my gut healthy PROTEIN AND FIBRE rich plant-based breakfast ideas instead. Simple and speedy to make and supper tasty.

Give me a delicious, colourful smoothie bowl over steak any day! 😅

Note: protein & fibre calculations are estimates only, calculated using Cronometer.

These days there is a wealth of information available on gut health.

It's fantastic that our knowledge and understanding of this complex topic is growing but too much information can also lead to overwhelm.

To really move the needle on gut health we probably don't need more information, another fad diet or more supplements and superfoods, we need behaviour change!

This can include making some simple swaps next time you go food shopping.

Here are my top 9 supermarket swaps that can benefit you and your gut bugs.

⭐FOODS TO ENJOY WHEN YOU ARE EXPERIENCING AN IBD FLARE⭐

I'm often asked how I managed to successfully implement a plant-based diet when I was unwell with Crohn's disease.

To be honest I tried and failed until I sought the help of a Health Coach. Every time I ate high fibre foods like spinach, broccoli, lentils, nuts, brown rice, quinoa etc., I was in horrible pain 2 hours later.

I now know that that starting by bringing in more foods high in soluble fibre vs insoluble fibre first is key.

Soluble fibre dissolves in water and helps form a soft gel-like substance, enhancing stool consistency and slowing gut motility. Insoluble fibre doesn't dissolve in water and excess amounts can be aggravating to a sensitive gut.

All plant foods contain a combination of fibres but certain plant foods are higher in soluble fibre and these are the ones to focus on when symptomatic.

Below are MY TOP FOODS to enjoy in abundance when you are symptomatic. These all provide soluble fibre for the gut microbiome, helping to repair the gut lining and reduce inflammation.

1. BANANAS - packed with pre-biotic fibre (pectin), bananas are one of the mandatory foods on the Crohn's Disease Exclusion Diet, shown to induce remission in children and adults with Crohn's disease
2. MELONS - super hydrating and loaded with antioxidants and vitamin C, high intake of watermelon is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer (IBD patients have increased risk)
3. PAPAYA - easy to digest and rich in vitamins A, C and E which can help reduce inflammation
4. APPLE - another mandatory food on the Crohn's Disease Exclusion diet due to its pre-biotic fibre (pectin) content
5. SWEET POTATO & POTATO - white potato is another mandatory food on the Crohn's Disease Exclusion diet due to its resistant starch content
6. OATS - a key food on the IBD-AID diet, another dietary approach reported to induce remission in some IBD patients
7. CHIA SEEDS - packed with fibre, protein and omega-3's, chia can encourage the growth of health-promoting gut bacteria

If you are struggling with an IBD flare, don't panic! You don't need to avoid ALL fibre. Focus on these foods plus others high in soluble fibre and seek expert guidance if required. These foods worked well for me, but we are all different 😍
