As Sarcoma Awareness Month draws to a close, we want to share some exciting research news.

🎗Research Update

Dr Emmy Fleuren and her team at CCI recently published in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, this important Australian study brings new hope for children and families affected by sarcoma.

Emmy led this study in collaboration with UNSW, Monash University and Queensland Children’s Hospital.
The study found that a type of targeted treatment, known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, may help more children with sarcoma than previously realised.
The study looked at samples from 107 children with sarcoma who were part of the ZERO Childhood Cancer Program, making it one of the largest and most wide-ranging studies of high-risk sarcoma in young people to date.

The research showed that while the changes driving sarcoma are often difficult to find, they can sometimes point to treatment options. In one high-risk form of sarcoma, the treatment showed very promising results in research models, and in one child, the tumour became smaller over several months on therapy.

Encouragingly, international data suggests that the same features seen in this type of sarcoma may be present in other children as well, raising hope that more young patients could benefit from this treatment in future.

You can read the research paper here if you would like to find out more about this research:
https://aacrjournals.org/mct/article/25/7/1077/786215/Comprehensive-Multiplatform-Tyrosine-Kinase

This is an exciting step forward in finding better treatment options for children with sarcoma, and we are deeply grateful for your support, which is helping make research like this possible.

Through Anya’s Wish, our goal is to build on this progress and help bring better treatment options to more young people facing osteosarcoma.

Every step forward matters. Every discovery brings hope. Every child deserves better treatments.

This work continues because of Anya's courage and the incredible support of our community through the 19 for 19 Challenge.

Together, we're turning hope into reality.

Register for this year’s walk!

We are incredibly moved by the story that made headlines this week about the students at Whitsunday Anglican School and

The students did an amazing job supporting their peer and we offer a huge congratulations towards them exceeding their goal.

If you want to support the students and Asher, details can be found about Music for Asher below:

💛🎗

Beyond Words: The Heartfelt Language of Music

Many of you who knew Anya know that music was a big part of her life. She played double bass in the PLCArmidale Orchestra, the Armidale Youth Orchestra NECOM

So when we heard what the students at Whitsunday Anglican School are doing for their friend Asher Hobbs, we felt so moved to share this with our Anya's Wish community.

Asher is a passionate musician and student at Whitsunday Anglican who is currently undergoing treatment for osteosarcoma 🩵

Her school community has rallied around her in the most wonderful way — the Arts Captains are leading a 12-hour music practice-a-thon, with students committed to a continuous, combined effort of music-making to support their friend during her treatment. 🙌

Their goal was to raise $5,000 for Anya's Wish!

We are so moved by this. A community of young people expressing their love through the language of music.

Please support these talented students at Whitsunday Anglican and their strong desire to make a difference for young people like Asher through Anya's Wish.

🎗July is Sarcoma Awareness Month – a time when we honour Anya and the precious lives that have been impacted by this cruel disease.

Each year, around 70 children and adolescents in Australia are diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Heartbreakingly, the five-year survival rate for children aged 0–19 with bone cancer is 72%.* It gets even tougher to treat when the tumour is spread through the body, with chances of survival dropping well below 30%. We know that is not good enough.

Anya was 13 when she was diagnosed with high-grade metastatic osteosarcoma that had devastatingly spread to her lungs.

It started with a sore knee, however Anya couldn’t recall injuring it. A visit to the physio correctly suggested an X-ray that quickly and clearly showed the disease in her femur.

This highlights why early detection is crucial - unexplained pain or lumps, particularly in active young people, should never be dismissed as just growing pains.

Throughout her 6-year journey Anya's strength, resilience and bravery inspired all those around her.

This is her story. (Link in bio)
