I have just returned from undertaking my 50hr yoga teacher training for trauma, anxiety, depression and body image in Sydney with the amazing and knowledgeable .yoga.counselling

It sounds heavy and it is, but itโ€™s something I feel passionate about to better understand how to make classes and offerings that are truly accessible and helpful to a wide range of people that may be able to benefit from some form of yoga practices.

I was fortunate to be in a room filled with such experienced and diverse backgrounds and perspectives- from psychotherapy to yoga therapy.

My head and heart are full and I have been working to process all that I have learnt. I will continue to process this over coming weeks and months and hope to bring some of this into classes and future offerings.

Current fortnightly classes on offer :
Monday - foundational yoga 5.45pm- 6.30pm
Tuesday - Everyday yoga 6.30pm - 7.30pm

Hope to see you in a class soon!

A few years ago I took the plunge and went on a yoga retreat by myself held by the lovely .mind.wellness. It was here I started a new path of exploration and new experiences leading into my yoga teacher training last year. ๐Ÿง˜

It has taken a lot of courage.
Courage to step outside my comfort zone and try something new. Courage to do it alone.
To not know where it will lead but do it anyway.
To be vulnerable.
To follow my heart.
To believe in myself more.

Before I started my yoga teacher training I doubted myself as I was not great at balances and feared having to demonstrate king dancers pose (pictured here).

Of course that is the first pose I had to teach to the whole class ๐Ÿ˜ณ but I managed and survived without falling over!

Since this time, with ongoing practice I have improved my ability to balance, but is still a work in progress and differs from day to day ๐Ÿ˜Šโš–๏ธ

I am preparing to gather my courage again for further yoga teacher training: 50hr yoga for trauma, anxiety and depression. Iโ€™m interested to explore in more detail how this is held in the body and how yoga can help with addressing this.

I hope to integrate learnings into upcoming classes and offerings.

Fun Fact Friday: Apparently it is Mindful May. I was not aware of this until yesterday, but now you know too ๐Ÿ˜Š

The concept of mindfulness can sometimes become saturated in wellness circles, however there are demonstrated benefits to some form of mindful practice. if you are thinking you could benefit from applying a practice to help still your mind, then yoga is a great way to start ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

There are still a few spots left for our next block of Foundational yoga classes commencing Monday 11 May at 5.45pm. Small classes, equipment provided, friendly environment. Why not give it a go?

We will be revisiting some foundational concepts for poses, breath and meditation.

Fun Fact Friday!

Hips not only hold physical tension, but they can hold emotions.

As someone with a science background, this was initially alien to me when I first heard it, but as I learnt more about yoga and itโ€™s benefits, it is not uncommon to experience an emotional release from certain practices - particularly in the hips. I have also experienced this first hand as I myself have tight hips. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿฆต

Traditional Chinese medicine also highlights how emotions are stored in the body.

Why do we hold tension here?

Physical Causes: Long periods of sitting at desks ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ปdriving ๐Ÿš— or repetitive motion (running/cycling) ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธโ›น๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธcause the iliopsoas (hip flexor) muscles to contract and tighten.

Emotional Storage: In yoga philosophy, the hips are considered a storage center for suppressed emotions, stress, and fear, often tightening during times of overwhelm.

Lower Back Connection: Tight hips frequently cause, or are linked to, lower back pain due to altered posture and pressure on the pelvis.

If you feel you could benefit from some hip release, this is the class for you! ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

Been feeling this lately! Stepping outside my comfort zone and into new ways of being has been a roller coaster ride, but leaning more into the creative and heart centred parts of me feels quite freeing! If you feel this way too, I invite you to take some time to connect with what makes you feel alive and in the moment! Yoga helps us to be in the moment and connect back into ourselves, so I thought I would share as a motivational Monday post- Have a great week ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ

I have heard people tell me lately they would like to do yoga, but they donโ€™t like yoga clothes or are not flexible enough.

Whole of heart is a small, welcoming space where you can work to your own level of flexibility and just wear clothes you can move freely in.

Monday classes are particularly good for beginners, but Tuesdays classes are also good for beginner-intermediate. Everything is adaptable! I also supply props to support you as needed.

Welcome to Whimsical Wednesday!

The C6 vertebra is often called the โ€œsmilingโ€ or โ€œhappyโ€ vertebra because, on medical imaging like X-rays or CT scans, the shape of the vertebral body and its upward-curved features resemble a smiling face. Located in the lower cervical spine, C6 supports the head and is vital for neck flexibility, often noted in anatomy as a โ€œsmilingโ€ landmark.

While not all vertebrae are smiling, they are all supporting you! At Whole of Heart yoga we appreciate how hard the spine works for us everyday, and ensure appropriate alignment and breath to support and strengthen our spine throughout practice.
