Lets Choose Curiosity Over Assumptions....

Too often, we see a diagnosis before we see the person.

Instead of asking...
"What's wrong with them?"

Let's ask...
"What are their strengths?"
"What brings them joy?"
"What are they passionate about?"
"How do they contribute to the people around them?"

When we become curious, we start to see what truly matters.

Kindness. Creativity. Determination. Humour. Problem-solving.
Resilience. Compassion.

These strengths don't disappear because someone has a disability. In fact, many people develop incredible strengths through the experiences they've faced.

This Ability August, challenge yourself to look beyond the diagnosis, beyond the equipment, beyond the support needs.

See the person. Discover their strengths. Celebrate their abilities.

Community Spotlight

There are so many incredible people in the disability community who share their lives, experiences, wins, challenges, humour and advocacy through social media.

Each week, I'll be shining a spotlight on a disability parent, carer, advocate, support worker or creator who is making a positive impact by sharing their journey.

My hope is that you'll discover new people to follow, learn something new, feel a little less alone, or simply enjoy seeing the world through a different perspective.

JUST BECAUSE EVERY STORY MATTERS

Today we look at Two Mates 1 Chair.

These are Aussie Mates (one who is wheelchair bound, hence 1 chair!) who have been traveling the world for the last three months! The adventures they get up to are nothing short of amazing!
Thinks mates in their 20s living their best life!

Two Mates 1 Chair can be found on TikTok and Instagram. Or via a simple google search showing up the news articles and Morning shows they've been on!

Ability Through Adaptation, Different doesn't mean less.....

Every person learns differently...

Modified learning supports help children and adults access education in ways that suit their individual strengths and needs. This might include visual supports, assistive technology, sensory tools, extra time, alternative learning methods, or personalised teaching approaches.

Success isn't about everyone learning the same way. It's about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and reach their potential.

Ability August....

Your Ability Makes a Difference

And EVERY person has something valuable to contribute.

Whether it's joining a local group, volunteering, finding meaningful employment, building lasting friendships, or speaking up for yourself, your unique abilities matter.

Community Participation builds confidence, creates connections and helps shape inclusive communities.

Volunteering isn't just about giving back, it allows people to share their skills, passions and lived experiences while making a real difference.

Employment Pathways recognise talents, strengths and potential. A diverse workforce benefits everyone through new ideas, perspectives and experiences.

Relationships and Friendships remind us that belonging isn't about fitting in, it's about being accepted for who you are. Genuine connections enrich all of our lives.

Self-Advocacy empowers people to have a voice, make informed choices and influence the decisions that affect their lives. When people are supported to speak up, everyone benefits.

Disability does not define a person's value. Every individual brings strengths, perspectives and experiences that make our communities stronger, kinder and more inclusive.

I came across this post from someone who recently took part in ‘Turning Circle’, part of The Keeper Project, and I thought it was something worth sharing.

Ro Clark is inviting people to navigate Maroochydore in a wheelchair, using a simple map and a series of prompts. Participants experience some of the everyday challenges that wheelchair users can encounter, crossing roads, navigating gutters, entering shops and trying to move through spaces that aren't always designed with accessibility in mind.

Reading about the experience really made me think about how valuable it can be to take a moment to see the world from a different perspective.

We can talk about accessibility.
We can talk about inclusion.
We can talk about barriers.

But sometimes, having the opportunity to experience even a small glimpse of those barriers for ourselves can make us stop, notice and think differently.

Of course, a short experience in a wheelchair can never replicate the lived experience of someone who uses a wheelchair every day. But perhaps that's not the point.

Perhaps the point is to pause. To notice. To question. And to become a little more aware of the environments and barriers that others navigate every single day.

If this sounds like something you'd like to experience for yourself, Ro is offering ‘Turning Circle’ until 21 August.

Email [email protected] to book your spot.

This morning I was taken out of my comfort zone and into a wheelchair as part of the The Keeper Project.

Ro Clark invited me to take part in 'Turning Circle' where participants navigate Maroochydore in a wheel chair using a simple map and a series of prompts.

We crossed roads together, I got stuck in a gutter, purchased something from the grocery store and couldn’t enter particular stores. It was a challenging and eye-opening experience. I got a lot out of it.

Ro is offering this opportunity to people until 21 August so if you’re interested in the experience, book in by email - [email protected] to book your spot!

The Keeper is produced by Red Chair in collaboration with Strange Engine. This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts and investment advisory body. The Keeper is supported by the Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with the Queensland Government through the Regional Arts Development Fund.

Ability Through Adaptation, Different doesn't mean less.....

Wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes and other mobility aids aren't limitations. They're tools that provide freedom, independence and confidence. They help people access their communities, participate in everyday life and do the things that matter most to them.

** Remember, not every disability is visible, and not everyone uses their mobility aid all the time. Kindness, patience and respect can make a world of difference. **

Participant Spotlight....

Real people. Real journeys. Real moments worth celebrating....

EPISODE #1.... The Toast!

SCENE: Living room.

Sister, Mum and Speech Pathologist are standing around chatting.
Participant is wandering around the room.

Participant approaches Sister. Participant, motions for toast.

Sister: “You’ve already had toast.”

Participant pauses. Looks at Sister.

Turns around.

Walks over to the Speech Pathologist. Picks up the AAC device they are trialing. Starts searching.

Everyone watches.

Participant finds

LUNCH.

Then…

SANDWICH.

Everyone looks at each other.

Sister: “Ohhhh… so we're negotiating now?”

Participant: 😏

END SCENE.

And honestly… this is exactly why communication matters.

The participant had something they wanted to communicate. They knew what they wanted to say. They just needed the right tool to be able to say it.

And apparently, when toast was denied… they simply upgraded their argument.

Mum = Proud. Me = Proud AND Laughing!
