A radiation-emitting implant placed during brain cancer surgery is drawing attention after new ASCO data suggested improved outcomes for patients with brain metastases.

GammaTile, a cesium-131 implant, begins delivering local radiation immediately after surgery rather than waiting for post-operative recovery before external beam radiotherapy begins.

For radiation oncology teams, this raises fascinating questions about the future of local radiation delivery, surgical pathways, dosimetry, radiation safety, QA, and multidisciplinary coordination.

Innovations such as these in cancer care demonstrate the progress that can be made when physics, surgery, imaging, oncology, safety systems, and clinical workflows come together around a patient.

Today, ACPSEM acknowledges the passing of Professor Richard Scolyer AO, whose work in melanoma research, pathology, patient advocacy, and public communication has had a profound impact in Australia and internationally.

Professor Scolyer's story reminds us that, as well as pioneering discovery, cancer research is also about courage, collaboration, translation, and the people whose lives sit at the centre of scientific progress.

For ACPSEM members working across imaging, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, radiopharmaceutical science, and cancer care, Professor Scolyer’s legacy is a reminder of the importance of multidisciplinary science.

Our thoughts are with Professor Scolyer's family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives have been shaped by his contributions.
