Are you experiencing symptoms of Trauma, this will help you understand what happens after a Traumatic event, if trauma is not treated effectively, it can linger in your nervous system and take away happiness and joy in your life:
Trauma is stored in the body through persistent patterns in the nervous system, muscles, and physiological responses, creating lasting physical and emotional effects.
When a traumatic event occurs, the body activates a survival response—fight, flight, freeze, or fawn—driven by the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.
If the trauma is overwhelming and unresolved, the nervous system can remain in a heightened state of alert, producing chronic tension, hyperarousal, or emotional numbness.
This persistent activation can affect heart rate, digestion, immune function, and even gene expression, leaving the body “wired” for threat long after the event has passed.
Muscles, Fascia, and Posture:
Trauma often manifests physically through chronic muscular tension, sometimes called “muscular armor.
Specific emotional conflicts can create habitual postures or tension patterns: for example, suppressed rage may lead to clenched jaws or fists, grief may collapse the chest inward, and anxiety may tighten the shoulders or hips.
These patterns reflect the body’s attempt to protect itself and can persist even when the mind feels safe.
Brain and Memory Processing:
Trauma also affects brain structures involved in memory and emotional regulation. The amygdala becomes oversensitive, the hippocampus may fragment memories, and the prefrontal cortex can shut down during trauma, leaving unresolved emotional memory instead of coherent narratives.
This contributes to sensations of panic, sudden tension, or emotional disconnection in everyday life, even when no immediate threat exists.
Common Physical and Emotional Signs:
Trauma stored in the body can appear as chronic pain, fatigue, digestive issues, anxiety, difficulty relaxing, or emotional numbness.
Behavioural signs include overreacting to minor stressors, while cognitive signs may involve intrusive thoughts or difficulty concentrating. These symptoms often seem unrelated but are linked to unresolved trauma patterns in the body.
Healing and Release:
Effective healing focuses on recalibrating and healing the nervous system. Approaches cognitive behavioural therapy, psychotherapy, body-based therapies, and meditation, which help the body release trapped energy and traumatic memories.
As the nervous system settles, individuals often experience reduced tension, greater emotional presence, and improved resilience.
In summary, trauma is not stored in a single muscle or organ but is embedded in the patterns of the nervous system, muscular tension, and brain function, producing lasting physical and emotional effects. Recognizing and addressing these patterns is the key to healing and restoring balance in both body, mind and soul.
