Meet Ferris!
At 13 years old, Ferris was suffering from severe periodontal disease. His mouth was badly infected, he had difficulty chewing, and swelling around his muzzle raised concerns for oronasal fistulas — abnormal openings between the mouth and nasal cavity caused by advanced periodontal disease.
Before surgery, Ferris was given antibiotics to reduce inflammation, and because a heart murmur was detected, he underwent a cardiology assessment to ensure his anaesthetic could be carefully tailored to his needs.
During surgery, dental radiographs revealed extensive periodontal disease, deep infection and several mobile teeth. Twelve teeth were extracted, including both upper canine teeth. Bilateral oronasal fistulas were also surgically repaired using large mucoperiosteal flaps and careful, tension-free closure to promote successful healing.
Ferris recovered beautifully, with both surgical sites healing well at his one-week check and completely healed by two weeks.
Since surgery, Ferris has truly thrived! He’s active, happy and back to enjoying his favourite pig ears. His family has also embraced daily brushing/oral cleaning, an appropriate diet and suitable chews to help maintain his oral health.
