Feeling sad isn’t about falling apart.
We’re not really taught how to be sad.
We’re often taught how to get rid of sadness.
Keep busy.
Think positive.
Look on the bright side.
Be grateful.
Move on.
But sadness is part of being human. Just like joy, anger, fear, excitement and love.
Feeling sad isn’t about falling apart, and it doesn’t mean letting sadness take over.
It doesn’t have to mean crying uncontrollably, staying in bed for days or feeling sad forever.
Allowing sadness can simply mean acknowledging, “I’m sad,” and finding a way to experience or express that sadness that works for you.
That might be crying — but it might not.
It might be going for a walk, listening to music, writing, talking, exercising, creating something, spending time in nature, sitting quietly, having a hug, or simply noticing, “I feel sad today.”
We all experience and express emotions differently.
Feeling an emotion doesn’t mean we have to become consumed by it. We don’t need to force ourselves to feel it intensely, and we don’t need to stay with it indefinitely.
It’s about giving ourselves permission to notice what’s there, allowing it some space, and finding ways to express it that feel safe and aligned with who we are.
Emotions don’t always need to be fixed.
Sometimes they just need to be felt, heard and allowed to move through us in our own way.
If you’d like to understand more about your emotions, how they show up in your mind and body, and ways of working with them that feel right for you, feel free to reach out.
