Walking is one of the best things you can do for your health, and I'll never tell you otherwise.

It's good for your heart. It's good for your blood pressure, your mood, your sleep and your joints. It's free, you can do it from your own front door, and you don't need to book anything or learn anything to get started. If you're already walking regularly, that's a habit worth being proud of.

Here's the bit that often gets missed though...walking doesn't do much for your muscle or bone strength. It's wonderful cardio, but your muscles adapt to it fairly quickly, and after that they aren't really being challenged any more.

As we get older, strength is the piece that really matters. It's what keeps us steady on our feet, it's what looks after our bones, and it's what keeps us independent and able to keep doing the things we enjoy.

So keep the walking, and add to it.

Strength training doesn't need to be scary or complicated. It just needs to be right for you. If you're not sure what that looks like for you, send me a message 💚

"I feel it in my lower back, not my glutes"

This is one of the most common things I hear when someone starts using the hip thrust machine.

Here are 3 set up tips to check to make sure your glutes are doing the work:

1️⃣ The pad. The back pad should sit just under the bottom corners of your shoulder blades. Not too high around your upper back or neck. With the hip pad resting directly across the crease of your hips.

2️⃣ Your ribs. Finish the top of the movement with your hips level and your ribs down, rather than arching at the top.

3️⃣ Your eyes. Keep chin gently tucked, gaze forward.

❗️Bonus tip - Think about pushing the floor away with your feet to lift your hips, rather than 'lifting' your hips on their own.

Small tweaks, but most people will feel the difference in the very next set...hello glutes!!

Happy training 💪

Curious what an Accredited Exercise Physiologist can actually help you with? 👇

I use exercise as medicine to support people managing chronic conditions, recovering from injury, and building long-term strength and function.

Some common conditions I see include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, chronic pain, post-surgery rehab, and healthy ageing.

It's a bigger scope than most people realise. It's also been part of Australian healthcare for longer than you'd think. Exercise Physiology has been formally recognised under Medicare here since 2006, making Australia one of the first countries in the world to recognise it as a Medicare-funded clinical profession.

So if you've got a health condition or injury you're managing, an Exercise Physiologist could be the right health practitioner for you.

Long time no see! 👋

It's hard to believe it's been over 12 months since B.E.P - Brisbane Exercise Physiology started out of Jindalee Fitness 24/7...and what a busy, wonderful period it's been.

It has been an absolute pleasure supporting so many incredible clients, I've learnt so much about building and running a business, and the best part, I'm just getting started!

I'll admit, getting on here more regularly is a little outside my comfort zone. But I want to connect more with the wider community, not just the clients I get to work with directly so get used to this face. You'll be seeing a lot more of it 💚
