- Arthritis

Again, this does NOT mean that pain is not real. Having an understanding that your mental state will affect or pre-empt flare ups is important.

Knowing this can be very reassuring, especially if you are worried about tissue damage when pain flares up.

For example, it is unlikely that a a simple movement like bending to pick up a pencil caused major damage to your back, but in the context of stress, and/or fatigue this may be enough to cause a flare up of symptoms.

When it comes to managing back pain effectively, knowledge and understanding is key!

Scans do not determine the prognosis of an episode of back pain, nor do they predict the likelihood of future episodes or disability.

What is far more useful to note, is your current level of function. Many X-ray images will show changes in the low back that may be normal age related change.

You can have an X-ray that shows these changes in an asymptomatic cohort.

So instead of focusing on the X-ray, we like to focus on the individual. We assess level of function and provide education, guidance and support to help you make improvements to your quality of life.
