More info on eating disorders
The prevalence of eating disorders in Australia is around 4.2% meaning there are over 1 million people with an eating disorder out there today. In a town the size of Bundaberg that means over 4,000 people. Yet, almost 75% of those with an eating disorder will not disclose it, and often it is not until they become unwell that others begin to notice. In our adolescent population, the prevalence can be as high as 12%, think about that for a moment, that’s almost 1 in every 8 person aged 13- 19 years old could have some form of eating disorder. There are lots of reasons a person can develop an eating disorder, and how we treat the disorder varies between individuals, what is true is that recovery is possible and the earlier an eating disorder is identified and treatment started the better the outcomes.
