๐Ÿ’š Why is choice so important in disability support?

Choice is a big part of supporting someone to live life on their own terms.

It can be as simple as:
โ˜• Choosing what to have for breakfast
๐Ÿ‘• Choosing what to wear
๐ŸŽต Choosing what music to listen to
๐ŸŒฟ Choosing where to go
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Choosing how to spend the day

These might seem like small decisions, but having control over everyday choices can help build confidence, independence and a sense of autonomy.

Good support isnโ€™t about making decisions for someone โ€” itโ€™s about providing the support they need to make their own choices. ๐Ÿ’š

At Positive Abilities, we believe everyone deserves to have their voice heard, their choices respected and the freedom to live life their way. ๐Ÿ’š

Sometimes the best support comes with four paws and a whole lot of love. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™

We love seeing the beautiful connections our participants share with their furry friends. Itโ€™s the little moments like these that make our days so special. ๐Ÿฅฐ

๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒณ When the wind changes the planโ€ฆ we change the plan WITH them! ๐Ÿ’™

Our participant had planned to spend the day at the park playing cards โ€” something he was really looking forward to. But when the wind decided to make itself VERY known, our wonderful support worker wasnโ€™t going to let a little weather ruin the day! ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

With a little creativity and some clever thinking, a makeshift card table was set up right inside the car ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿƒ โ€” allowing our participant to still enjoy his cards at the park, just in a more wind-proof setting! ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’จ

This is what great support looks like. Itโ€™s not always about sticking rigidly to a plan โ€” itโ€™s about listening to what matters to the person, thinking creatively, and finding a way to make it happen. ๐Ÿ’™

Sometimes the best solutions are the ones you make up along the way! ๐Ÿ™Œโœจ

Same plan. Same smiles. Just a little more shelter. ๐Ÿฅฐ

๐Ÿ’š A Little Kindness Can Go a Long Way ๐Ÿ’š

We were recently so grateful to receive a generous donation of food from a wonderful member of our community. ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅซ๐Ÿž

Rather than letting it sit, we were able to pass the donation directly on to one of our participants who was doing it tough and needed a little extra support. โค๏ธ

Itโ€™s moments like these that remind us how powerful community can be. It doesnโ€™t always take something big to make a difference โ€” sometimes itโ€™s simply sharing what you have, looking out for one another, and showing a little kindness. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿค

A huge thank you to the person who donated. Your generosity has helped put food on the table and, more importantly, reminded someone that they are supported and their community cares. ๐Ÿ’š

Letโ€™s keep looking out for each other. Together, we can make a difference โ€” one small act of kindness at a time. ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

๐ŸŒฟ Making Social Outings More Comfortable for People with Sensory Sensitivities ๐Ÿ’™

Getting out into the community can be exciting, empowering and a great way to build confidence โ€” but for someone with sensory sensitivities, busy environments can sometimes feel overwhelming.

A few simple things can make a big difference:

๐Ÿง  Plan ahead โ€” knowing where youโ€™re going and what to expect can help reduce anxiety.

๐ŸŽง Bring sensory supports โ€” headphones, sunglasses, fidget items or other familiar tools can help someone feel more comfortable.

โฐ Choose quieter times โ€” visiting places outside of peak hours can make an outing much more enjoyable.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Listen and communicate โ€” check in regularly and give the person the opportunity to say when they need a break.

๐Ÿšช Have an exit plan โ€” knowing thereโ€™s somewhere quiet to go, or that you can leave if needed, can provide reassurance.

Most importantly, let the person have a say in the experience. ๐Ÿ’™ Support isnโ€™t about pushing someone through an uncomfortable situation โ€” itโ€™s about creating opportunities that work for them, at their own pace.

Sometimes a successful outing isnโ€™t about how long you stayed or how much you did. Itโ€™s simply about getting out, feeling comfortable and having a positive experience. ๐ŸŒˆ

๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฆ Making a Splash with Support! ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Thereโ€™s nothing better than getting out into the community, having some fun and enjoying a good swim! ๐ŸŒŠโ˜€๏ธ

Our support workers are here to encourage participants to get active, try new things and enjoy activities that bring a little fun into the day. ๐Ÿ’™ Whether itโ€™s swimming, getting some exercise, building confidence or simply having a laugh โ€” support is about helping people live life on their terms. ๐Ÿ™Œโœจ

A big shoutout to our amazing team for getting in the water and making community access fun! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ‘
