This Women’s Health Week, we’re recognising that women’s health is about much more than one symptom, one concern or one stage of life.

Your body changes over time through pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, ageing and menopause. These changes can affect how you feel, how your body functions and, sometimes, how you feel about your appearance.

At FNQ Plastic Surgery, we believe conversations about cosmetic and reconstructive surgery should start with your overall health, individual circumstances and expectations, not simply a treatment.

Women’s Health Week is a reminder to ask questions, seek appropriate medical advice and make informed decisions about your health at every stage of life.

24/08/2026

It is entirely reasonable for patients to ask, “Can I have the same treatment my friend had?”, but the answer is usually “no” and here is why:

Even when two individuals present with similar aesthetic concerns, the aetiology and contributing factors may differ substantially. Variations in facial skeletal structure, soft tissue volume and distribution, cutaneous quality (including photodamage, laxity and dermal thickness), systemic and dermatological medical history, as well as specific treatment objectives, all influence which interventions are clinically appropriate and safe in a given case.

For this reason, surgical & non surgical procedures should not be selected on the basis of social media trends, anecdotal outcomes, or another person’s treatment plan.

A comprehensive, face‑to‑face assessment including medical history, examination, and where relevant adjunctive investigations allows your practitioner to identify your individual risk factors, diagnose the underlying condition, and formulate evidence‑based management options tailored to your clinical presentation.

As part of our consultation process, our Nurse Practitioner contacts patients before they book a consultation with Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Kristian Sørensen. This helps us keep care safe, ethical, and genuinely in the patient’s best interests.

What happens before you see Dr Sørensen
• Our Nurse Practitioner calls you for a short pre‑screening appointment.

• They review your referral, medical history, medications, allergies, and previous surgeries.

• They assess whether the treatment you are enquiring about is clinically appropriate for your anatomy, health, and lifestyle.

Why the mental health screen matters
• Cosmetic and plastic surgery require stable mental health and realistic expectations; they are not suitable for everyone.

• During the call, we ask about psychological wellbeing and screen for concerns such as body dysmorphic disorder, significant anxiety or depression, or situations where surgery may not be the right option.

• Where needed, we may suggest input from your GP or a mental health professional before any surgical planning, to support safe decision‑making.

Our priorities as a clinic
• Your safety and wellbeing come before any procedure.

• We only proceed where you are medically and mentally fit to give informed consent and to manage surgery and recovery.

• This process helps ensure consultations with Dr Sørensen are considered, transparent, and consistent with current professional and ethical standards for cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

12/08/2026

Wrinkles don’t form overnight; they gradually develop as structural changes occur beneath the surface of the skin over time. In tropical environments like Far North Queensland, the combination of high UV exposure, heat and reflective surfaces (such as water and sand) can contribute to increased cumulative cellular damage in the skin, particularly if sun protection is inconsistent.

As we age, collagen and elastin production naturally decline, the dermal support matrix becomes less robust, and the skin’s renewal process slows, which can lead to fine lines and deeper wrinkles. Long‑term sun exposure, especially in harsh tropical conditions, can accelerate these changes by damaging collagen and elastin fibres, altering pigment cells and increasing oxidative stress, while lifestyle factors such as smoking, sleep quality and overall health further influence how prominently these changes appear.

Understanding the biology behind wrinkle formation—how collagen, elastin, UV‑related cellular damage and skin cell turnover interact—can help you make more informed decisions about prevention, skin health and treatment options that suit your individual circumstances and local climate.

Laser skin treatments, including resurfacing and collagen‑stimulating modalities, may be considered as part of a personalised plan to address certain signs of skin ageing by promoting epidermal renewal and supporting new collagen formation in the dermis, particularly when combined with rigorous, year‑round sun protection in tropical settings.
