Today is Global MND Awareness Day, an opportunity to raise awareness and understanding of MND and the impact on those living with MND, their caregivers and communities.
Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive degenerative disease. It affects the nerves causing muscle weakness and paralysis.
Every day, 2 Australians are diagnosed with MND, and every day 2 Australians die from MND.
In 90-95% of cases of MND, the cause is unknown. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is 2 to 3 years.
We use today to raise awareness of MND and to recognise and honour those living with MND, their caregivers, communities and healthcare professionals that support them.

Let's unite in our efforts to create a better future for everyone affected by MS.

SMARTfit technology at Royal Rehab LifeWorks Cairns
One of the benefits of incorporating technology into an exercise physiology program is that it accurately measures and records performance so you can track how well you are doing and challenge yourself each time to improve.
Here Glenn is using the SMARTfit to improve his coordination and cognition of tasks. He completes the activity in a great time and is really happy with his achievement.

Which exercises can help with osteoporosis
If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis, or at risk of developing osteoporosis, exercise can really help. But what type of exercise is best and what should be avoided?
🔸 Weight bearing exercises stimulate the bones to build more bone tissue and become denser. These are exercises that apply force on the bone such as fast walking, jogging, weight training, Pilates and yoga. This does not include swimming, cycling or a leisurely stroll as they are low impact exercises which do not apply much force to our bones.
🔸 Weight training makes you stronger which will decrease risk of falls and therefore decrease risk of fracture due to osteoporotic bones.
🔸 Balance exercises which may include Pilates and yoga, will also help decrease risk of falls and associated fracture.
Walking 30 minutes a day will increase the chance of achieving optimal vitamin D levels through sun exposure but don’t forget to also be sun smart!
There are also certain exercises to avoid if you do have osteoporosis. These include very high impact exercise or loaded twisting exercises, as these could cause fractures.
If you would like to know more how we can assist with osteoporosis, get in touch with the team today on 1800 966 212.
Wondering how the exercises you do at the gym can help you in your everyday tasks? Our team of exercise physiologists offer some practical insights.
