🤔What happens at a Home Birth skills day?.. (doesn’t stay at a home birth skills day 😂)
Home birth midwives are incredibly skilled at protecting emotional and physical safety through relational care.
There are also mandatory requirements for us to stay up to date with a whole range of skills as part of our registration.
Days like these to connect and share stories while practicing hands on emergency skills are so valuable.
Know that when you engage a midwife for your care you are in safe, skilled hands 🥰

✨Owning a business means you are never truly ‘off’, however a change of scenery sure makes admin less painful!
✨ I am back doing appointments in a couple of weeks so still feel free to reach out if you are looking for support. 🥰

The Autumn Equinox falls this Saturday, and with it we’ll be sending out our next Mama e-Nook newsletter. This seasonal edition offers reflection, stories, and meaningful conversations around motherhood and matrescence.

Pour a cuppa, grab a notebook, and join us for:
🍂 An autumnal reflection with journalling prompts (especially for Australian and New Zealand mums based in the southern hemisphere)
🤍 A conversation with Jo’s Midwifery and Lactation from Cairns, exploring how we can better support mothers through our work and community care
🌿 A call out for collaboration if you’re a birth worker, complementary therapy, or mother who would like to share your story or wisdom
🖊️ A heartfelt Mama Share from a mother of two who has been moving through our journalling process from 'My Sacred Initiation Into Motherhood'

The Mama e-Nook is a cozy corner of the internet where we can connect more intentionally — beyond the noise and unpredictability of social media.

If you’d like to join us, I would love to welcome you into the Nook.

🌟 Do you remember what was playing when your baby arrived Earthside?.. 🎵🎵

This photo was taken just minutes before baby arrived to the Dirty Dancing classic ‘Time of My Life’. The irony was not lost on Mum while her support people had a good old giggle at the timing of this track on the playlist 😂

This was baby number 2 arriving just as quickly as his brother had in the Birth Centre previously (without the hectic car trip!).
Mum surrounded by her husband and her own Mother and the same midwife who shared her first journey as well as myself.

Just an ordinary, yet extraordinary life event 🤗😍

🤔What do running shoes have in common with breast pump flanges?..

🙋‍♀️ The right fit makes ALL the difference to your comfort and performance…

If you are expressing for any reason, make sure you look at how to measure up to get the best results from all your hard work!

I have various sizes and shapes on their way from the US if you would like some help, so you can spend less time attached to your pump, pump comfortably and optimise your milk supply…

Sitting in the creek during an antenatal home visit today, mind blown by the fact it’s been 3 whole months immersing myself in my business exclusively and I’m so glad I took that time.

I will be going back to the world of working rostered shifts part time, where my ‘office’ is not quite as incredible as this, but which also holds its own rewards and opportunities for connection and being able to make a difference.

I am so lucky to have so many options to do meaningful work.
I will be continuing my private work so please still reach out if you are looking for midwifery or breastfeeding support going forward.

💕 The theme of this post is support. Seems like a no brainer to some people but to others seeking this out is enormous, especially if there is a history of people letting them down.

💕 I would like to acknowledge this Mum’s strength and share her words directly for anyone who resonates 🤗
I would like to offer a note on support.

Who you choose to be around you matters, especially your partner.
Do what you need to feel whole and safe.
I wish someone could of told me that first time around with someone else.
I chose to have a baby to my second husband with trauma from my first and it’s a vastly different experience.
I didn’t know that kind of support existed.
I would like to offer the voice to the silently suffering, ask for support from a friend or family member, you deserve to be supported and sometimes that means from someone other than we hoped.
Get the midwife, go to the group and ask for reliable support from someone that cares for you.

✨ I have been working on my nervous system and intuition and part of this process is recognising and following this intuition, then being open to trust and receive what comes…

An opportunity was presented to me this past week which I was excited about but needed training- then in comes the training opportunity right on time to go ahead with it…

Follow me to see how I may be able to help you with ni**le pain and trauma, blocked ducts and mastitis, caesarean and perineal healing and even haemorrhoids with a safe, evidence backed tool.

The handle may be Cairns Midwife Jo but I have worked with families from North of Cairns, down to Mission Beach and up to The Tablelands.
We live in such an amazing region and it’s beautiful to take the time to visit and re-visit the places I would, at times, take for granted living here so long, when I’m on the road doing home visits.
If you are looking for care outside of Cairns don’t hesitate to reach out. 🤗
Post inspired by today’s stop in at the magical Babinda Boulders.

💕 This theme has been so strong for me this week

I have witnessed mothers, sisters, colleagues and friends, even complete strangers, supporting each other through birth, mothering, at work, in the gym.
Stepping up, holding space, encouraging and supporting, showing generosity of spirit.
So grateful for the women of the world and the women in my life…
