'Alarming': survey shows poor support for stressed ACT Ambulance staff'

The latest ACT Ambulance Service (ACTAS) staff survey paints a depressing picture of employee health compounded by reports of severe stress, understaffing and violence.

The 2025 survey data captured and compared responses from more than 13,000 ACT public service workers, including 323 across the Emergency Services Agency and 119 within ACTAS.

Disclosed internal documents reveal "the most alarming result" that only 16 per cent of employees felt ACTAS policies supported their health and wellbeing, far below the ACT public service benchmark of 54 per cent.
.....The survey found 41 per cent of staff experienced high or very high levels of stress, while 22 per cent reported rarely or never feeling burnt out.

More than 70 per cent said a lack of staff was among the main causes for their work-related stress, while only 36 per cent felt their workload was appropriate for their role.

Exactly half the ACTAS survey participants reported experiencing violence or aggression at work, mostly from a patient (87 per cent) or a member of the public (70 per cent).
.....Nearly 30 per cent of ambulance staff personally experienced workplace bullying, with most citing psychological bullying such as unreasonable work demands and trivialisation of concerns.

Additionally, 19 per cent of ACTAS staff reported experiencing workplace discrimination, and 13 per cent reported personally experiencing sexual harassment.
.....The ACTAS survey also demonstrated the ambulance service's strengths as satisfaction with job stability (82 per cent), team performance (81 per cent), supervisor support (70 per cent), and customer service culture (69 per cent).

".....In recent public safety alerts, ACT Policing said seven people had died from suspected drug overdoses involving opioids since August 2026.
Latest ambulance surveillance data has revealed escalating alcohol and drug harm with ACT paramedics responding to nearly 4000 substance-related callouts in a single year.

According to Australia's Annual Overdose Report 2026, published by the Penington Institute, the ACT recorded 28 unintentional drug-induced deaths in 2024.

Long-term metrics highlighted a growing fatal overdose rate in Canberra, which rose from 4.8 per 100,000 residents between 2010 and 2014 to 6.7 between 2020 and 2024.

While serious alcohol intoxication accounted for 2070 ACT emergency callouts in 2024, illicit drugs and pharmaceutical medications triggered more than 1900 responses combined."

šŸš‘ Ever wonder why an ambulance might load a patient, close the doors… and then just sit there?

Chances are, we’re not just sitting there.

Once a patient is inside the ambulance, the crew has an entire mobile emergency room at their fingertips—cardiac monitors, medications, IV supplies, airway equipment, and much more.

Sometimes, before we ever put the ambulance in drive, we need a few minutes to:

🩺 Assess the patient
ā¤ļø Check vital signs or run an EKG
šŸ’‰ Start an IV or give medications
🫁 Manage breathing or other immediate concerns
šŸ„ Determine the best hospital for that patient

That last one is important.

Not every hospital provides the same level of care for every emergency. A stroke, major trauma, or cardiac emergency may require a specific destination—and what we find during our assessment can completely change where we go.

Could we do some of this while driving?Absolutely.

But some things are a whole lot easier—and safer—when we aren't bouncing down the road. šŸ˜‚

So, the next time you see an ambulance sitting in front of a house after the patient has been loaded, remember:

We’re not wasting time. We’re using it. šŸš‘šŸ’™

The crew may already be assessing, treating, and making critical decisions before the wheels ever start moving.

šŸ’ What’s something you’ve always wondered about what happens inside an ambulance?

It’s always a pleasure to be visited by some of our amazing paramedics! šŸš‘šŸ‘

These dedicated professionals go above and beyond every day to support our community, often in incredibly challenging circumstances.

We had a great discussion about the realities of life as a paramedic and the importance of finding ways to better balance work, family and personal wellbeing.

I am strongly committed to working with our paramedics to find practical solutions and ensure we are doing everything we can to support them, both on and off the job. ā¤ļø
