Gynaecological cancers may not be talked about as often as many other cancers, but they affect thousands of Australians every year.

In 2025, an estimated 7,000 Australian women were diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer, with around 1 in 23 women expected to be diagnosed by the age of 85.

With no routine population screening programs for most gynaecological cancers, being aware of persistent or unusual changes in your body is important.

If you notice any changes, have a chat with your GP.

September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month.

Gynaecological cancers are cancers of the female reproductive system and include cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, vulval and fallopian tube cancers.

While cervical cancer has a national screening program in Australia, there are no routine screening tests for most other gynaecological cancers. This makes knowing your body and speaking to a healthcare professional about persistent or unusual changes particularly important.

Pathology plays an important role in investigating, diagnosing and managing gynaecological cancers. Depending on the cancer, this can include blood tests, examination of tissue collected during a biopsy or surgery, and molecular or genetic testing that provides important information about the cancer and can help guide treatment.

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of blood cancers and the people and families affected by them.

Blood cancer is a term used for many different cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Blood tests can be among the first investigations that identify abnormal blood cell counts, while further laboratory testing of blood, bone marrow and other samples can help confirm a diagnosis, identify the specific type of blood cancer and provide information that helps guide treatment.

Edward underwent surgery after being diagnosed with an enlarged prostate. However, it was a biopsy following that surgery that revealed cancer cells in his prostate.

At the time, Edward was advised that no further treatment was needed, but his specialist recommended a blood test every six months to monitor for changes.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men. PSA testing can help detect changes that need further investigation and is also used to monitor prostate cancer following diagnosis and treatment.

Since being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, regular PSA testing has been an important part of Steven’s cancer journey.

Despite having his prostate removed, his cancer has progressed over the years and he has recently undergone a second round of radiation therapy.

Regular PSA tests help his healthcare team monitor his cancer and inform decisions about what needs to happen next.
