September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month!

Prostate cancer affects thousands of Australian men and their families every year.

While survival has improved significantly over the past 40 years, prostate cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia.

Pathology plays an important role in prostate cancer detection. A PSA blood test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen in the blood and can help identify changes that may require further investigation.

Talk to your GP about your prostate cancer risk and whether PSA testing is appropriate for you.

Max was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996 after a PSA blood test detected a change that led to further investigation.

A biopsy confirmed the cancer, and Max went on to have surgery. Now 79, he is still fit and well and continues to have regular PSA testing.

Earlier this year, Max also had a PSMA test, which found no evidence of cancer.

Syphilis is on the rise in Australia.

The number of infectious syphilis cases has almost tripled over the past decade, with cases reported across Australia.

Syphilis can be detected with a blood test and is easily treated when found early. Left untreated, however, it can cause serious health problems.

If you think you may have been exposed or would like to know whether you should be tested, speak with your GP.

Gonorrhoea is becoming increasingly common in Australia.

Between 2015 and 2024, the number of gonorrhoea notifications increased by 140%, from 18,456 to 44,210.

Gonorrhoea can be detected through pathology testing and treated with antibiotics. If you've had unprotected s*x, a new s*xual partner or think you may have been exposed, talk to your GP about STI testing.

Those results revealed Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"I'll likely die with the disease, not because of it", Gladys says.

Rare cancers may be uncommon individually, but they are not uncommon as a group. There are hundreds of different rare cancer types, and together they account for around one in four cancer diagnoses in Australia.

For Craig, regular blood tests have become an essential part of monitoring his health. For many people living with rare cancers, pathology provides valuable information that helps healthcare teams monitor disease progression, assess treatment and make informed decisions about ongoing care.
