We talk a lot about managing diabetes, but what about the importance of connection & community?

Finding people who understand what it’s like to live with diabetes, or parent a child with diabetes, can be so valuable. It’s a chance to share experiences, learn from each other and feel understood. When so much of diabetes is those mind miles, having people who “just get it” means a lot.

For your child- being able to see others wearing the same pump or sensor can be that small thing to know there are others out there like them 🫶🏻

You don’t always have to join an in person group or attend events. Sometimes, it starts with one conversation or connecting with one person who understands.

Have you found your diabetes people? Where did you find community? 💛

In a recent clinic I didn’t even look at the glucose data of half the people I saw. This might seem crazy to some, but there are things that matter more in that moment.

How are you feeling about diabetes? How are you feeling about food? Are you burnt out? Are you avoiding things because you’re worried about BGLs? How much of your day is spent thinking about diabetes?

For all of us, it’s easy to get caught up in the numbers. HbA1c, time in range, highs, lows, patterns- but there is a whole person and family sitting behind that data.

And sometimes what someone needs from their diabetes appointment isn’t another adjustment to their insulin. Sometimes they just need to talk about how exhausting diabetes is and what we can do to reduce that.

The numbers matter. But they are never the whole story.

I haven’t eaten anything… so why is my blood glucose high? It’s a question I get asked often in appointments

While food can certainly have an impact on glucose levels, it’s only one aspect! Stress, illness, hormones, sleep, dawn phenomenon, and insulin delivery can all contribute.

If your numbers aren’t making sense, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve done something wrong. Sometimes it’s “diabetes being diabetes” but a lot of the time- looking at the bigger picture can often reveal what’s really going on. Send us a DM if you need help looking at that bigger picture 💙
