A hepatologist specialises in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions affecting the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas.

These organs play a vital role in digestion and overall health, and when something isn’t functioning properly, expert assessment is key.

Common conditions managed by hepatologists include hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and pancreatitis.

With specialist expertise, our hepatologists focus on early detection, accurate diagnosis, and personalised treatment plans - helping patients protect and optimise long-term liver health.

That uncomfortable sensation of food “sticking” in your chest or sternum area isn’t something to ignore.

It may be a sign of an oesophageal stricture - a narrowing of the oesophagus that can make swallowing painful or difficult.

The good news is this condition is highly treatable. Oesophageal dilation is a minimally invasive procedure that gently stretches the narrowed area, helping restore normal swallowing function and relieving symptoms effectively.

Most patients experience significant improvement, allowing them to eat and drink with far greater comfort again.

If swallowing has become uncomfortable or unpredictable, it’s important to have it assessed - effective treatment options are available.

This Dietitians Week, we’re recognising the vital role Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) play in supporting gut health and overall wellbeing.

At the Centre for Gastrointestinal Health, our APDs are an integral part of the care team. They work alongside our specialists to provide holistic, evidence-based support that goes beyond symptoms - focusing on digestion, nutrition, and long-term health outcomes tailored to each individual.

Dietitians Week is a national initiative that highlights the profound impact dietitians have, not only in guiding individuals toward better nutrition, but in shaping healthier communities and strengthening public well-being.

We’re proud to have dietitians at the centre of our approach to care, ensuring patients receive comprehensive support at every step of their digestive health journey.

Patient safety extends far beyond the procedure itself.

Behind the scenes, our team follows strict safety protocols, reviews documentation, confirms clinical details, and carefully coordinates every stage of care before, during, and after your procedure.

It's the work patients rarely see that helps ensure safe, high-quality care every step of the way.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia - and while it is often associated with older adults, we are now seeing a concerning rise in cases among people under 40.

The important message is this: Bowel cancer is not just an “older person’s disease”.

Early signs can be subtle or even absent in the early stages, which is why awareness and screening are so important. Symptoms may include changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, ongoing abdominal discomfort, unexplained fatigue, or unintended weight loss.

With rates increasing in younger adults, it’s more important than ever not to dismiss persistent symptoms - and to seek medical advice early.

When detected early, bowel cancer is highly treatable, which makes timely screening and investigation essential for protecting long-term health.

Coeliac disease is a common autoimmune condition where gluten (found in wheat, rye and barley) triggers an immune response that damages the small intestine and affects nutrient absorption.

Symptoms can vary widely and may include bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fatigue, iron deficiency - and in some cases, no obvious gut symptoms at all.

Accurate diagnosis is essential before starting a gluten-free diet. This typically involves blood tests and a gastroscopy with biopsy to confirm intestinal damage.

The only treatment is a strict lifelong gluten-free diet, where even small amounts of gluten can cause ongoing harm.

With early diagnosis, medical guidance and dietetic support, coeliac disease can be effectively managed and long-term complications reduced.
