How should busy people workout? How do you get more for less?

Isolation exercises target one muscle group at a time while compound / complex exercises target multiple muscle groups and place a high metabolic / calorie burning demand on the body.

So this is a pec / chest fly in a plank position. Like a machine or free weight fly, it targets the pecs and anterior deltoid however it also targets the anterior abs…BUT, the movement stimulus in the upper body also challenges lateral and rotational core and hip stabilizers.

Not only that, the freeFORM Board also allows for diagonal and circular motion. The pec major is a fan shaped muscle, a 1/4 circle so it really benefits from loading through different angles.

So we have upper body and core integration to load more muscle groups and burn more calories, we have the ability to load through multiple angles AND we can effortlessly and seamlessly progress or regress this exercise for different fitness levels.

This is one exercise among thousands you can perform with a freeFORM Board all of which can be described in similar terms where they deliver multiple benefits for each movement.

Many thanks to for the video.

Flex-extend, freeFORM Board + foam roller for the boys in Casula, South Western Sydney.

Spinal articulation, core activation and spinal mobilization challenging the anterior core through a greater range of motion than the equivalent movement without the roller.

If you sit in a car or behind a desk for hours a day then this variation is for you.

Another world first 🙌 by in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The unstable bird-dog is usually performed with either one knee or one hand on a docked and unlocked freeFORM Board. In doing so, the core activation goes through the roof and even an athlete can be caught off guard by the intensity.

This variation is much more difficult because there are no stable bases of support and the supporting hand and knee are so close together so that the base is very narrow and unstable.

Usually you would have to stabilize against the rotation of the board but in this variation you are deliberately generating rotation. Rotation is one of the best exercises for the vestibular and proprioceptive senses (provided it’s a safe form of rotation for you or your client to practice)

If it is safe, give it a try and post a video.

NRL player effortlessly pumping out some atomic push ups on the freeFORM Board in Menai, Sydney.

If you want to see Josh’s Pilates moves, check out Insta feed.

While this is a whole body power move, Josh also does some stability and ROM Pilates based exercises. Rugby League is a sport that requires a lot of speed and power but it’s also a multi directional reaction and inspect sport and making sure the joints are stable through all angles and planes of motion can prevent injuries.

A little tip for those ho are strong but have some hamstring mobility issues. Try some freeFORM dynamic mobility exercises before practicing pikes and you’ll be able to load through a greater range of motion.

freeFORM Board group class is on tomorrow / Saturday at Pilates Insync.

Not every neighborhood has the opportunity to train like and along side of elite athletes.

Even so, watching this video it’s hard to distinguish who is a professional athlete and who isn’t because everyone looks so agile and athletic.

A bit of an auto edit showreel by phone of a some exercise clips by in Menai in southern Sydney.

The freeFORM Board was specifically designed to synergistically integrate different fitness and movement variables such as whole body strength, endurance, balance, motor control, flexibility and other variables. It will help you get fit and you’ll also move more skillfully. Without any tracks to guide the motion, it’s not the freeFORM Board that controls you, it’s you that has to control the freeFORM Board and your body in 3D space and gravity.

If your anywhere near Menai, book a class or private session with the team

If you’re too far away, there are studios, gyms and physiotherapists you use the teach FreeFORM exercises across Sydney, Australia and the world.

in Athens, Greece.

This is a great example of an alternative to a standing exercise. Tall kneeling changes the lever length and lowers the centre of gravity relative to a standing exercise.

This makes the equivalent motion, in this case eccentric hip abduction and concentric adduction more stable.

With this added stability and control, it is possible to centre the body weight between the two legs instead of mostly over the stable leg as you would do when standing.

Of course the purpose of the exercise is to stretch and strengthen the adductors and this can be used in mid to late stage adductor strain rehab or physical therapy and can also be used to prevent groin strains occurring.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with performing linear, sagittal plane, forward - backward repetitive movements. There are many health and fitness benefits to any exercise.

Having said that, I can immediately see that understand the thinking behind the freeFORM Board by the way they transition between angles and planes of motion, strength and cardio and stability exercises and floor and standing exercises.

The exercises shown here demonstrate movement of sagittal, frontal and transverse planes, angles in between and upright and floor exercises.

To summarize it once again, the freeFORM Board was designed to support what the body has evolved to do which is to move with more diversity and variety than any other living organism.

Early on in the development of the freeFORM Board, I demonstrated some freeFORM exercises to one of the top strength and sport coaches in Australia.

He pointed out that beyond core, strength and other performance variables, the freeFORM Board would be very useful in motor pattern specific skill development. He suggested that the board would activate the nervous system in a more realistic manner to any other product that is currently available.

Years later, the freeFORM Board is being used by countless professional and elite Olympic athletes around the world. Not all of them are as generous in sharing their workouts as 4x Olympian and bronze medal winner at the recent Tokyo Olympics. Diving requires the highest level of agility, flexibility, strength, timing and motor control.

The unrestricted movement capacity of the freeFORM Board is particular good for acrobatic based sports because of all of the angles, planes, ranges of motion and movement transitions that the freeFORM Board supports.

Here is Melissa practicing a plank to like to handstand on two freeFORM Boards.

fluid STRETCH at Nike Super Workshop in Shanghai, China.

We didn’t just jump on board and start these extreme range of motion moves but built up to them gradually.

The fun factor of the freeFORM Board always wins over the crowd. There’s often cheers and ear to ear smiles as people discover they can do movements they had never considered.

I look forward to doing this again once the Covid restrictions are lifted around the world.

Thanks for arranging all of my visits to China, Hong Kong and elsewhere in South East Asia.

Loving these exercises by

For those not familiar with the freeFORM Board modes of operation, this board is secured in its base docking station so it can only rotate and not roll.

The Cadillac frame can be held for additional support or it can be there just in case you lose balance and need further stability.

Spring loaded tension or resistance loads the open chain leg in hip extension (glutes and hammies) adduction and flexion.

Note variations where the open chain leg is extended and flexed.

Note that the freeFORM supported leg can remain extended or flexed.

The freeFORM supported side leg, hip and core will fire up and require additional stability through the entire system.

I recall a functional training expert explaining that our “stabilizers needs to fast…not strong” which explains why you don’t work with heavy or maximal loads in unstable exercises.

Whether the load and movement is through hip extension, adduction or flexion, the highly responsive rotation bearing in the freeFORM Board will require whole body, kinetic chain integrated stabilizer activation.
