🦵 Knee pain? Start with these 3 beginner-friendly exercises

If knee pain is making everyday movement feel harder, gentle strengthening and mobility exercises may help you build confidence and improve how your knee and leg move.

Here are 3 exercises recommended by a physio:

1️⃣ Straight Leg Raise
Strengthens the quadriceps — key muscles that support the knee and help control movement. Building quad strength can help improve your tolerance to movement.

2️⃣ Heel Slides
A gentle way to move your knee through its available range. They can help maintain or improve flexibility, reduce stiffness and make everyday movements more comfortable.

3️⃣ Clamshells
Strengthens the outer hip muscles to support better leg control and help reduce stress on the knee. Keep your hips still as you move. For an extra challenge, try a resistance band around your knees.

💡 Remember: Start gently and work within a comfortable range. If an exercise significantly increases your pain, stop and speak with your physiotherapist or healthcare professional.

Diastasis recti after pregnancy? You’re definitely not alone. 🤍

After three babies, our receptionist Ellen is showing us one of the common signs associated with diastasis recti — “coning” or “doming” through the midline of the abdomen.

Diastasis recti is something many women experience during and after pregnancy. As the abdominal wall stretches to make room for baby, the abdominal muscles can separate.

The good news? There are ways to support your core, rebuild strength and improve abdominal function. 💪🏼 Ellen is practising what we preach, demonstrating some of the exercises we use to slowly and progressively build core strength and control:

1️⃣ Bent knee drop-outs
2️⃣ Heel slides
3️⃣ Dead bugs
4️⃣ Alternating tabletop leg lifts
5️⃣ Pallof press — using a Theraband to progressively add resistance as your strength improves

A few things to focus on:
✔️ Engage your pelvic floor throughout each repetition, then relax between repetitions.
✔️ Aim to avoid or minimise coning/doming throughout the exercises.
✔️ Focus on controlled, quality movement rather than rushing through the reps.

Had a baby and concerned about diastasis recti?

Book an assessment with our Physio to find out how we can assess your core and help you get started with an exercise program tailored to you. 🤍

Did you know? Groin, knee and ankle injuries are common in hockey.

Acceleration, sudden stops, lunges, rotations and constant changes of direction place repeated stress on the lower limbs. When load exceeds capacity, small changes in strength, flexibility or coordination can increase injury risk.

💪 Physiotherapists do more than just treating injured body parts. They can also help identify what is contributing to overload and guide tailored exercise and training strategies to improve load tolerance and reduce injury risk in hockey.

Did you know?
Around 68% of tradies say they most commonly experience pain or discomfort in their back, neck or shoulders.

That's why the Australian Physiotherapy Association has made August Tradies Health Month—to raise awareness about the importance of tradies' health and wellbeing.

Physiotherapy can help prevent injuries, manage pain early and keep tradies strong and moving, both on and off the job.

👷‍♂️ Tag or share this post with a tradie in your life and remind them to look after their body—and to see a physio if aches and pains are slowing them down.
