🖤💛❤️ Keep Mob Safe – Check Your Diphtheria Protection ❤️💛🖤

Our brothers and sisters in the Northern Territory are currently dealing with a diphtheria outbreak, so now is a good time to make sure you and your family are protected.

Diphtheria can cause skin infections and sore throats and spreads through coughing, sneezing and close contact. In some cases, the bacteria can produce a dangerous toxin that can lead to serious illness.

The good news is that diphtheria vaccination is FREE for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Queensland aged 20 years and over if you need:
✔️ A full course of 3 doses
✔️ A booster dose if your last vaccination was more than 10 years ago
✔️ A booster dose if your last vaccination was more than 5 years ago and you're travelling to a high-risk area

If you have a skin sore or sore throat, don't wait — see your doctor or health clinic.

📍 Have a yarn with your local health service and check whether your vaccinations are up to date.

Looking after ourselves helps protect our children, Elders, families and communities.

💜 Meet Mackenzie, our dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Generalist Health Worker with the Social and Emotional Wellbeing team based in Toowoomba. 💜

Mackenzie is a proud Kullilli and Boonthamurra woman, born and raised on Giabal and Jarowair Country in Toowoomba. She is passionate about building strong relationships, creating meaningful connections, and supporting community through her work with the Social and Emotional Wellbeing Team.

You might spot Mackenzie at a local coffee shop, the farmers markets, or having a yarn with someone around town. She values being present, visible and connected within community, believing that strong relationships are at the heart of positive health and wellbeing outcomes.

Mackenzie says, “Every time I yarn with our mob, I’m reminded that healing starts with connection, culture, and community. As an Aboriginal Health Worker, I’m proud to walk alongside our people and help build a stronger, healthier future for the next generation.”

She also believes that “Our identity is our strong story,” recognising the importance of culture, belonging and connection in supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Thank you, Mackenzie, for the care, compassion and support you provide to community every day. 🤍

The final day of National Reconciliation Week every year is one of the most significant in Australia.

Mabo Day, celebrated annually on 3 June, commemorates Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his successful advocacy to overturn the legal fiction of terra nullius, or ‘land belonging to no-one’.

Following the High Court’s Mabo decision, Australia’s Federal Parliament passed the Native Title Act 1993 which established a legal framework for native title claims throughout Australia by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

and Mabo Day are a reminder to be ‘All In’ to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to commit ourselves to reconciliation and the fight for First Nations justice in Australia.

It's Never Too Late To Vaccinate.

Everyone aged 6 months or older can get a free flu vaccination.

It is also important to stay up to date with COVID-19, RSV and Pneumococcal vaccinations.

It’s one of the best things you can do to avoid the Emergency Department this winter.

Don’t delay, contact your GP or pharmacy to get vaccinated today.

(*Cost: the vaccine itself is free. However, some GPs or pharmacists may charge a consultation fee for administration)

✨ Creating a more culturally safe and welcoming space at Warwick Emergency Department ✨

Developed in line with Darling Downs Health’s 2025–2028 Health Equity Strategy, the Warwick Emergency Department Artwork Project was created to help make the space feel more culturally safe, welcoming and reflective of First Nations peoples and communities.

Guided by consultation with Traditional Owners, community members, health organisations and staff, the artwork was designed by Aboriginal artist and Mandandanji woman Nyssa Blades.

Representing healing, connection, community and culture, the artwork reflects our ongoing commitment to reconciliation, cultural respect and improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 🤍
