Amy, Mick, Owen and Chelsea recently visited our five purpose-built SDA homes under construction in Alice Springs to see the latest progress and walk through the spaces that will soon become homes.

It was a great opportunity for our senior team to see the development firsthand, discuss the progress on site and consider how the completed homes will support the people who will live there.

With construction continuing, we’re getting closer to seeing these homes come to life, creating new SDA options designed with accessibility, independence, choice and everyday living in mind.

🏠 Did you know there are four main SDA design categories?

Not all Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes are designed the same way.

The NDIS has four SDA design categories, each developed to meet different disability-related housing needs:

🔹𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 – designed with enhanced features for people with sensory, intellectual or cognitive impairments.

🔹𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 – designed with a high level of physical access for people with significant physical support needs.

🔹𝗥𝗼𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘁 – designed to be strong, durable and safe, including for people who may require support with complex behaviours.

🔹𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 – designed for people with very high physical support needs and may include features such as ceiling hoists, backup power and home automation.

Understanding the different categories is an important part of finding a home that is appropriate for the way a person wants and needs to live.

We’re pleased to welcome the first two of four new wheelchair accessible Hyundai Staria vans to Somerville.

Each vehicle has been professionally modified by FREEDOM MOTORS AUSTRALIA and can transport two passengers using wheelchairs, along with three additional passengers.

The new Staria vans offer a more car-like driving experience than our larger vehicles, while still providing the accessibility and flexibility needed to support people to get out and about safely and comfortably.

Our first two vans will be based in Darwin and Katherine, with another two to follow for Palmerston and Alice Springs.

Investing in accessible transport is another way we can support greater choice, independence and participation in the community for the people we support.

A big thank you to FREEDOM MOTORS AUSTRALIA for their work in modifying the vehicles and helping us get them ready for the road. 💙

With construction continuing to move forward, the homes are becoming easier to imagine as future places to live, designed to support greater independence, accessibility, choice and everyday comfort for people with disability in Central Australia.

For Somerville Housing, this project is about more than building houses. It is about creating homes that are designed around the needs of the people who will live in them and increasing the availability of suitable SDA options in Alice Springs.

Last week, we were delighted to celebrate the official commencement of construction of five new Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes in Alice Springs.

The event marked an exciting milestone for Somerville Housing as we continue our commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible housing for Territorians living with disability.

We were honoured to be joined by The Hon. Steve Edgington MLA, Chansey Paech: Member for Gwoja, representatives from the Northern Territory Government, AsBuild NT, Susan Dugdale & Associates, members of the Somerville Housing Board, and our dedicated staff to celebrate the beginning of this important project.

These purpose-built SDA homes will provide safe, modern and accessible housing designed to support people with disability to live with greater independence, choice and dignity within their community.

This project represents a significant investment in Alice Springs and reflects Somerville Housing's ongoing commitment to increasing the availability of Specialist Disability Accommodation across the Northern Territory.
