💙 THAT’S A WRAP! 💙

National Week of Deaf People has officially ended!

Last Friday, a bunch of us Darwin Deafies took the reins in the kitchen at Sticky Fingers Kitchen Cooking School and embraced Emma’s Swedish culture! 🇸🇪👩‍🍳

We learnt how to make Swedish Wallenbergare — a delicious type of rissole — and a yummy Swedish Cheesecake! 🍰😋

There was lots of cooking, learning, laughing, and, of course… eating!

A BIG thank you again to Emma for having us and sharing a taste of your Swedish culture.

We’re already looking forward to the Christmas Cooking Class! 🎄👩‍🍳

What a delicious way to finish off National Week of Deaf People! 🥰

OMG… I am STILL pumped after MCing last night! 😂💙

Is it normal to still be this excited the next day? Who knows… nothing is normal for me! Hahaha! 🤣

Last night was such a special experience — MCing my FIRST comedy gig in Auslan! 🎤🤟

And having interpreters there made the whole show accessible! A massive thank you to Ace and Bettina for being absolutely awesome and bringing so much energy to the night. 💙

I also loved watching Shalom connect with the audience. He had a couple from Cockburn in WA who regularly visit Darwin because they love it here — and they’re even thinking about moving to Darwin!

Then it was my turn to come back on stage… and of course, I HAD to ask them:

“So when you move to Darwin… are you going to move to the suburb called Fannie Bay?” 😂😂😂

I mean… I couldn't NOT ask!

What a night. What an experience. And what a way to celebrate National Week of Deaf People! 💙🤟

Massive congratulations to ME… I mean Tiff from AccessiBelle! 😂 for surviving my first comedy MC gig in Auslan!

I’m still buzzing! 🥳💙

🚒🔥 PRE–NATIONAL WEEK OF DEAF PEOPLE – NT FIRE & RESCUE 🔥🚒

Last Friday, we had a special visit to NT Fire and Rescue Service to kick off our pre-celebrations for National Week of Deaf People! 💙🤟

A BIG thank you to our amazing fire crew for welcoming the Deaf Community to the Darwin Fire Station! 👨‍🚒🚒

Of course… fire season had other plans! 😅🔥

Our firefighters were called out to attend a grass fire, so we only had a limited time with our fire crew. But we still managed to have a fantastic visit!

We learnt about the different types of emergencies that Fire & Rescue attend and got to check out and play with some of their firefighting equipment! 🧯🚒👀

But we also got to explore behind the scenes and see what life is like for our firefighters when they’re not out responding to emergencies! 👨‍🚒

👀 We checked out:
🚒 The fireman’s pole
🛋️ The recreation room
🔐 The storage locker room
🏋️ The fire station gym

It was so interesting to see the different areas of the fire station and learn a little more about what happens behind the scenes! 🤩

We completely understand — when the alarm goes off, our firefighters need to go! 🚨🔥

Even though our visit was shorter than planned, we had a great time and really appreciated the opportunity to come along.

Thank you NT Fire and Rescue Service, for supporting our Deaf Community and helping us kick off National Week of Deaf People early! 💙🤟🚒

💙 A big thank you to Just Auslan for continuing to promote awareness and understanding around Auslan and the Deaf community. 💙

Especially during National Week of Deaf People! 🥰

But for me, Just Auslan has also been a BIG part of my own journey over the past few years. 🥹💙

Yes, I can speak and hear… BUT it is exhausting! 😅

Finding Auslan and discovering my Deaf identity has changed so much for me. Without the support and opportunities from Just Auslan, I honestly think I would still be a lost soul trying to figure out where I belong.

Auslan has given me connection, confidence, identity and my Deaf community. 🫶💙

Have you ever wanted to learn about firefighting? 🔥🚒

🔹 What is their job?
🔹 What equipment do they use?
🔹 What is it like to be a firefighter?

Come and have a look, learn, ask questions and meet the firefighters!

📅 WHEN?
Friday 18 September

⏰ TIME
3:30pm

📍 WHERE?
Darwin Fire Station
32 Iliffe Street, Woolner

It is not far from Parap.
You know Stuart Highway?
The United Petrol Station is on the corner. At the traffic lights, look across the road, on the other corner… That is the fire station!

🤟 AUSLAN SUPPORT

Auslan communication support will be provided by Tiffany from AccessiBelle. 🤟💙

🎉 EVERYONE IS WELCOME! 🎉

Deaf and Hard of Hearing:

👶 Babies
🧒 Children
👨‍👩‍👧 Adults

Everyone is welcome!

⚠️ BUT… there are TWO IMPORTANT THINGS to remember:

1. PARKING IS LIMITED 🚗⚠️

There are only a small number of parking spaces.

If you can, carpool with your friends or family.

For example:

🚗 Pick up your friends, children
👨‍👩‍👧 Come together in one car

This means fewer cars at the fire station.

2. FIRE SEASON 🔥⚠️

You may have noticed the smell of smoke around. Yes, it is fire season now.

Firefighters have an important job.

*Jay is preparing for a job.

Conversation between Tiff and Jay:

Tiff: “Ohhh, what is happening? Do you need to save a person now??”

Jay: “Yes – Shalom Kaa with bolt cutters ready to go!” 👨‍🚒✂️

Tiff: “Shalom!? Ohhhh, we need to save Shalom!!!!”

This event could be cancelled at any time, so keep that at the back of your mind. ⚠️

If there is an emergency, they may need to leave suddenly. 🚒💨

We hope everything goes ahead as planned! 🤞

Hopefully, see you there! 👋😊🚒
