💜 Reflections Along the Way💜

Last week I received a message from someone I'd met only once, several years ago, when we owned our café in Dirranbandi.

We spent almost 40 minutes on the phone talking about his grandparents, his family and the town we both hold close to our hearts.

I'd known his grandparents many years ago. He had never lived in Dirranbandi himself, but every visit had helped shape his connection to the place and to the people who came before him.

As we talked, I realised something.

Sometimes our memories become part of someone else's family story.

A memory that seems ordinary to us can be something a child or grandchild has never heard before. It can fill in a missing piece, bring a loved one to life, or simply remind someone that the people they cared about are still remembered.

It made me think how easily these conversations can be lost if we don't share them while we still can.

Those ordinary memories somehow brought two people back to life.

Every life leaves stories behind. Sometimes all they need is someone willing to tell them. 💜

We often think the important stories are the big ones.

But they're usually the little ones that disappear first.

Who stoked the fire in the old stove.
Who sang while washing the dishes.
Who insisted everyone stop for a cuppa on long trips.
Who never missed a local football game.

Those aren't written in history books.
They're carried by families.

Until one day, nobody remembers them anymore.

That's why stories matter.

We rarely drive past an old cemetery without stopping.

Not because we know the people buried there.

But because every headstone represents a life, a family and a story.

Sometimes we recognise a surname.
Sometimes we learn a little local history.
Sometimes we simply wonder who they were.

While travelling through Clermont, we noticed a familiar surname on a headstone.

It immediately made me think of people I went to school with in Dirranbandi and wonder whether there might be a family connection.

Sometimes a cemetery thousands of kilometres from home can unexpectedly reconnect us to people and places from our past.

Today marks 49 years since my mother, Una, passed away.

Forty-nine years feels like a lifetime, yet her influence still quietly threads its way through our family.

My 29-year-old daughter never had the opportunity to know her grandmother, yet she also loves many of the songs Mum once loved. She enjoys listening to Dean Martin, Elvis and Englebert Humperdinck — music that filled my mother's world many years ago.

A few years ago, she and I went to see Engelbert Humperdinck perform on the Gold Coast. Sitting there together, I couldn't help but think how much Mum would have loved it.

The day after tomorrow, her great-granddaughter turns one year old and carries Una as her second name.

Four generations separated by time, yet still connected.

It reminds me that people do not simply disappear when they die. Their music, their stories, their names, their traditions and the things they loved continue to travel through families in ways we often don't expect.

Forty-nine years after Mum's passing, she is still part of our conversations, our memories and even the songs we sing.

A life is never measured only by the years it was lived, but by the generations it continues to touch.

How many family photographs sit in boxes with nobody left to identify the people?

One generation knows every name.
The next knows a few.
By the third generation, the stories can disappear completely.

Memorial pages, photographs and family stories help ensure that names don't become strangers.

Writing someone's story and recording the names of the people they played with, worked with and shared their lives with is one way of making sure those memories are not lost.

This old Dirranbandi football team photo (names in comments) includes three of my uncles and two of my cousins. I know most of the faces, although there are a few I can't remember, and my children would probably only recognise one or two.

Sometimes family history connects people in unexpected ways. 💜

A lady travelling from Victoria visited Warwick Cemetery while tracing her ancestors’ footsteps through Queensland.

While walking through the cemetery, she discovered something completely unexpected — the only grave she found with a QR memorial code happened to belong to her own family line.

After scanning the code and reading the memorial page, she contacted us thinking we were connected to the family.

We passed her message on to the family member who had created the memorial page, and they were deeply touched to hear from relatives they had never known about.

It was a beautiful reminder that preserving stories is about more than history.

Sometimes it helps reconnect families across generations, distances, and branches once thought lost.

Because every story shared has the potential to become a bridge to someone searching for where they belong.

One thing we noticed while travelling was how many memorial benches and seats we came across around the world.

Some overlooked oceans.
Some sat quietly beside old stone walls.
Others were tucked into local parks and walking paths.

Each carried someone’s name.
Someone deeply loved and remembered.

But often we found ourselves wondering about the person behind the plaque.

Who were they?
What made them smile?
What stories did their family treasure most?

Sometimes a name is enough to remind someone.
But sharing a story allows that memory to live beyond a single moment or place.

Family history research often begins with names, dates, records, and places.

A birth certificate.
A passenger list.
A church register.
A weathered inscription.

Each discovery helps piece together a family story.

But sometimes the most meaningful question comes later:

Who were they beyond the records?

While travelling in London, we followed information someone had shared online about my Crawley ancestors. That research eventually led us to a family crypt at Bow Church cemetery — a place we may never have found otherwise.

It reminded us how important family historians and researchers are in preserving connections across generations.

Research helps us find our ancestors.
Stories help us know them.

That’s why preserving personal memories matters too — not only for our generation, but for those still searching many years from now.

One of the things we notice when visiting old cemeteries around the world is how remembrance continues quietly across generations.

A bunch of fresh flowers can say so much —
someone is still loved, still visited, still remembered.

Behind this grave stands a very old Church, filled with history people travel miles to see.
Yet sometimes it’s the smaller human stories nearby that stay with us longest.

Not just dates.
Not just names.
But connection.
