The Diabetes Technology Research Group (DTRG) is committed to improve the lives of people with diabetes through exceptional research, clinical trials and state-of-the art technologies. Our research is of paramount importance to people with diabetes across a range of areas, including exercise, diet and the development of advanced innovative technologies. We are dedicated to empower our clinical tri

al participants by providing expert medical advice to help achieve their health goals and thus relieve the impact and burden of diabetes. Our mission would not be possible without the multidisciplinary and complementary expertise of our dedicated team, led by our director Prof David O’Neal who has over 20 years of experience in this field. Our teams’ overarching objective to understand diabetes through research has already transformed thousands of lives each year. We have a strong network of collaborations (over 40 in total) that include local, national, international and patient representative partners, with whom we have generated many publications and clinical guidelines that have been translated into clinical application of the technologies we have investigated. DTRG is a non-profit organisation operating in Victoria, Australia. DO YOU WANT TO HELP DEVELOP THE NEXT GENERATION OF WEARABLE MONITORING TECHNOLOGY?

We Need You to Join KeLOG-MT, a First-in-Human Clinical Trial of Leading Multi-Analyte Sensor Technology

This study will assess a new sensor capable of measuring glucose, ketones, lactate, and oxygen with the goal of improving diabetes management.

You May Be Eligible To Take Part In This Study If You:

• Are aged 18 years or older
• Do not have diabetes
• Live with diabetes and use insulin
• Feel comfortable wearing 3 study sensors on your body
• Can monitor your glucose and ketone levels using finger-sticks
• Are willing to consume specified carbohydrates and ketone supplements

Participation in this study requires your involvement for up to a TOTAL OF 1 WEEK which includes 3 visits to the clinical site

Congratulations to Dr Pauline Du on her poster presentation at the combined International Diabetes Federation, ADC and Metabolic Diseases Congress in Melbourne. Dr Du shared results from the PARTNER Exercise Sub-Study, looking at how SGLT2 inhibitors, a type of diabetes medication that helps lower blood sugar by causing the kidneys to remove more glucose through urine, affect people with type 1 diabetes during high-intensity exercise. In this small study of 13 participants, blood sugar and ketone levels after exercise were similar between those taking the medication and those taking a placebo. Larger studies are needed to better understand the safety of SGLT2 inhibitors during exercise in people with type 1 diabetes.

Congratulations to Dr Yee Wen Kong on her presentation at the IDF, ADC and Metabolic Diseases Congress in Melbourne, where she was selected to present at the Korean and Australian Diabetes Societies Joint Symposium. Dr Kong discussed the benefits and risks of SGLT inhibitors, which is a type of medication that helps lower blood sugar by helping the kidneys remove more glucose through urine, but is not approved due to increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in people with type 1 diabetes. Dr Kong shared how this therapy may be made safer for use in people with type 1 diabetes through strategies to manage and reduce the risk of potential DKA.

Congratulations to Dr Yee Wen Kong on her selected presentation at the International Diabetes Federation, Australian Diabetes Educators Association and Metabolic Diseases Congress in Melbourne. Dr Kong was invited to share her research findings from PARTNER study at the Australian Diabetes Society President’s Young Investigator Award. Her research explored SGLT2 inhibitors, a type of diabetes medication that helps lower blood sugar by helping the kidneys remove more glucose through urine, in adults with type 1 diabetes. In a study of 65 adults, the SGLT2 inhibitor Dapagliflozin helped people spend more time in their target blood sugar range, while also reducing insulin requirements and body weight, with no cases of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) reported during the study. These encouraging findings highlight that this therapy may be suitable in people with type 1 diabetes when there is careful ketone monitoring and education.

Congratulations to Dr Melissa Lee on her presentation at the International Diabetes Federation, ADC and Metabolic Diseases Congress in Melbourne. Dr Lee shared real-world results from 6,161 people with type 1 diabetes in Australia using the Omnipod® 5 automated insulin delivery system, including both children and adults. With use of optimised settings, children aged 2–18 spent around 80% of their time in their target blood sugar range, compared with 76% for adults, while very low blood sugar levels (hypoglycaemia) were uncommon, occurring for approximately 1% in both children and adults. Overall, both children and adults achieved good blood sugar control, and both groups spending very little time with low blood sugar. These real-world findings highlight the potential of automated insulin delivery to help people with type 1 diabetes manage their blood sugar safely and effectively in everyday life.

Congratulations to Dr Cherie Choong on her poster presentation at the combined International Diabetes Federation, Australian Diabetes Educators Association, and Metabolic Diseases Congress in Melbourne. Dr Choong shared results from the REGENT-1 and REGENT-1-US studies, which investigated a new, non-surgical treatment for people living with type 2 diabetes. The results suggest that ferritin, a measure of the body’s stored iron, could help predict who may respond best to the treatment. People with higher ferritin levels at the start of the study generally experienced greater improvements in their blood sugar levels over the subsequent 24 weeks. The follow-up ReCET study is currently ongoing and may provide further insights into this signal. D.T.R.G. congratulates Dr Choong and the REGENT and ReCET teams, and thank you to Endogenex for supporting this exciting research into new approaches for treating type 2 diabetes.

Congratulations to Dr Jean Lu on presenting the results of her Renal HCL study at the combined International Diabetes Federation, Australian Diabetes Educators Association, and Metabolic Diseases Congress in Melbourne. The study explored whether an automated insulin delivery system could help people with diabetes and advanced kidney disease manage their blood sugar better than usual insulin injections. Among 40 participants, those using the automated system spent 73% of their time in the target blood sugar range, compared with 60% on usual care. The observed improvement was found to be a result of fewer periods of high blood sugar, while lower blood sugar levels were uncommon. These encouraging results suggest that automated insulin delivery could be a safe and effective option for improving blood sugar control in people with diabetes and advanced kidney disease.

We note the recent media reports that have raised concerns regarding the safety of people living with diabetes who are using technology to manage their glucose levels.

Individuals living with the condition who were interviewed shared their experiences and concerns with using diabetes technologies. At the same time, we observed that there was limited opportunity devoted to exploring the benefits of these devices, especially the experiences of many people whose lives have been positively impacted by these technologies.

The team at the Diabetes Technology Research Group (D.T.R.G) acknowledges that the experiences shared by the people using diabetes technologies who spoke on the program and quoted in the newspaper articles were very real and distressing. Their concerns deserve to be heard and taken seriously.

We also recognise that the devices and technologies mentioned are not perfect, and our team at D.T.R.G are committed to ongoing research that will contribute to refining these devices. We hope that by doing so, we will continue to better support people living with diabetes who are using these devices and technologies.

We also know that, for many people living with diabetes, these technologies have been life changing. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin pumps, which can also be combined with automated insulin delivery systems, have transformed diabetes management for many individuals. In turn, this has had a positive impact on the lives of people living with diabetes and their families. Evidence from clinical trials and user feedback has consistently shown support for these therapies, especially the benefits to both physical health and emotional wellbeing for people using CGMs and insulin pump technologies.

Most importantly, “Empowering Us”, a national community-led survey of almost 3500 Australian adults living with type 1 diabetes with current or previous experience using diabetes technologies, specifically insulin pumps and CGMs, found that 98.3% of respondents reported diabetes technology was “important” or “extremely important” in helping them manage their glucose levels within target range, as well as reducing both the frequency and severity of hypoglycaemia. More than 85% of respondents reported that their emotional wellbeing was “better” or “much better” since using these technologies.

While there is always room for improvement in the current generation of CGMs and insulin pumps, we at D.T.R.G believe it is important that conversations about diabetes technology reflect both its benefits and its limitations. We strongly encourage balanced reporting, as it enables people living with diabetes and their families to make informed decisions, helps minimise unnecessary fear and anxiety, while ensuring that genuine concerns continue to be acknowledged, understood and addressed.
