Sometimes it takes one sentence from someone else to give us permission to do what we already know we need to do.
For Gail Eaton-Briggs, that sentence came from a doctor, while she sat in his office with her young daughter on her knee. "Gail, it is time to go get yourself a lawyer." She'd known it for a long time, she just needed someone to affirm it. In this episode, Gail shares the tipping point that took her from what she now calls the zone of unconscious grit into the zone of conscious grit, and the model she's used to navigate every hard chapter since.

A nurse asked him to rate his pain. He said nine. She said "okay, miss." He said "no. Mister."

That's the moment PhD researcher Thy O'Donell keeps returning to when he talks about what's actually missing from end of life care for trans and gender diverse people. Not a new specialty. Not more training. Just someone asking, and someone writing it down.

My latest piece puts Thy's research next to funeral celebrant Bronte Price, grief therapist Dr Annetta Mallon, and philosopher Katrina Jaworski, and finds the same gap showing up in four different rooms: a hospital bed, a coffin with two names on it, a memorial that erased who someone actually was, and the quiet assumption that gender never really factors into how a death gets read.

Trans care is just care. Full piece in bio.

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW...
How do we help children understand funerals and grief?
In this episode of Don’t Be Caught Dead, Catherine Ashton speaks with Tasmanian author and celebrant Gail Eaton-Briggs, who shares what inspired her to write Remembering Nanny – Millie and Tom’s First Funeral.
They explore how honest, age-appropriate guidance can help children navigate death and funerals with confidence and compassion.

"No, they're too young."
It's the line Gail Eaton-Briggs hears again and again when she asks families if their kids will be at the funeral.
But after more than 40 years working with children, and hundreds of funerals as a celebrant, Gail doesn't believe there is a too young. She says it's all about preparation, and about a grown-up being able to say: I've got your back, you're going to be okay, and we'll talk about it afterwards. In this episode, she shares why she keeps a box of teddy bears in the boot of her car, just in case a child needs one to hug.

I’m delighted to share that I’ve been invited to be a Judge for the 2026 AusMumpreneur Awards!🏆

It’s a real privilege to be part of a judging panel recognising the incredible women building businesses across Australia.

Having previously been recognised through the AusMumpreneur Awards myself, I know just how much these awards can mean. Behind every application is a story of courage, resilience, growth, persistence and purpose, and I’m looking forward to reading those stories and celebrating the women behind them.

I’ll be looking closely at achievement, business growth, resilience, impact, vision and the potential to inspire others.

Most importantly, I’m excited to discover some of Australia’s next season of incredible women in business. 💜

Thank you to the AusMumpreneur team for trusting me with such an important role. I’m honoured to be part of the 2026 judging panel.

Good luck to all the finalists. I can’t wait to meet you through your stories! ✨

"You're not just seen as trans, but as a whole person."
The most meaningful change Thy O'Donell wants to see in healthcare isn't complicated. It's clinicians treating trans patients like whole people, not a diagnosis to manage. Gender affirming care isn't exceptional. It's just care.

Myth: you have to stop hormone therapy in palliative care.
Truth: you can be on HRT until the day you die. Patches, injections, there are options even if swallowing becomes difficult. PhD researcher Thy O'Donell breaks down why this misconception keeps trans people away from the care they need.
