Our A Team showed up and showed OUT to help celebrate 50 Years of Deadly at Cessnock St Patrick's NAIDOC day on the 25, July 🙌

Malakai and Dakota ran group sessions yarning about Aboriginal Artefacts — how we make them, what we use them for, and why they matter to our mob. The little ones had SO many questions and honestly, it was beautiful to watch. To make the day more fitting, if you didn't know that Dakota has a history of working with early childhood and primary school aged kids, you do now! She nailed the "1,2,3 all eyes on me" followed by the good old faithful teachers echo clapping - Sis even had Mal's undivided attention! 😂

That's the work right there. Keeping culture strong, one yarn at a time. We love what we do, and we hope they loved it just as much!

Proud of you both, you both just that neat! 😏

NAIDOC Week 2026 kicks off tomorrow and we are so proud to be celebrating 50 Years Deadly with our community.

This year marks 50 years of NAIDOC Week — 50 years of standing strong, celebrating culture, and keeping our voices loud. And what a way to kick it off right here on Awabakal Country.

Tomorrow down at the Newcastle Foreshore, our very own the big boss man Abie and Wok aka Street Warriors are performing, and we are here for it! The mob is showing up and showing out.

We do not have a stand this year but you will definitely see us out there getting around, soaking it all in and celebrating with the community.

If you spot us come on over and have a yarn, we love a good chat and there is no better place to have one than surrounded by our mob on NAIDOC Week.

Flag raising and march parade starts 9am at Civic Park Newcastle, then head down to the foreshore from 10am for the entertainment, stalls, food, drinks, rides and so much more.

See you there mob.

Honouring Aunty Gwen on her Birthday 🖤💛❤️

Today we remember and celebrate Aunty Gwen Wright — Black Excellence at its finest. A strong Aboriginal woman, a leader, but more than anything, a true matriarch for her family and community. Her love and dedication for her husband, her children, her grandbabies, and her family near and far showed in everything she did.

Aunty Gwen was one of those women who carried mob on her shoulders. She stood strong, spoke up, and always made sure our people were looked after. She led with love, strength and culture, creating space for our women, our families and our young ones to feel supported, connected and proud of who they are.

Her legacy runs deep. The way she showed up for community, opened doors, backed her people and held culture strong is something that will be carried for generations. She helped shape pathways for mob and made sure our voices were heard and respected.

That strength and matriarchy lives on through her family and through the heart of WACCCS. The way we walk alongside mob, the way we support, and the way we keep culture at the centre comes from strong women like Aunty Gwen.

Today we honour her, we remember her, and we carry her with us in everything we do.

Always respected. Always remembered. Always with us. 🤎

Meet the founder & director of WACCCS — Abie Wright ✊🏾

WACCCS was founded by Abie Wright, a proud Aboriginal man with strong ties to community, culture and Country. Abie is a descendant of the Gomeroi, Anaiwan, Dunghutti and Wonnarua peoples, with deep connections across Newcastle and the wider community.

Abie has always been about community, walking with mob, sharing culture, mentoring, teaching and passing knowledge down to the next generations. His work across community, advocacy and leadership has always been grounded in making sure our people are supported, connected and given real opportunities.

At the heart of Abie’s journey is his late parents, Jimmy and Gwen Wright. They were strong community leaders who stood up for mob, created pathways where there were none, and made sure our voices were heard. They carried culture with pride and led with strength, leaving a legacy that will live on for generations. The way they showed up for community, fought for better outcomes and backed their people is what shaped Abie into the man he is today.

That legacy lives through WACCCS.

WACCCS was built to go back to the foundations — supporting mob the right way, through culture, respect, connection and accountability. It’s about walking alongside our people, taking the time to yarn, listen and understand, and making sure everyone feels seen, heard and valued.

Through culturally safe, trauma-informed supports, WACCCS is here to help mob grow stronger, build independence, and stay connected to culture, community and Country.
