History of Chen-Style Tai Chi (Taijiquan)

Origins in Chen Village (Chenjiagou)

Chen-style Tai Chi (Chen Taijiquan) is widely recognised as the oldest and original form of Tai Chi, originating in Chenjiagou (Chen Village) in Henan Province, China. The art is believed to have been formally developed in the 17th century by Chen Wangting (1600–1680), a retired military officer during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.

After leaving military service, Chen Wangting combined his knowledge of battlefield martial techniques, traditional Chinese medicine, Daoist philosophy, and breathing practices to create a system of movement that could be used for both health cultivation and martial training.

His system included:
β€’ Slow, flowing forms to cultivate internal energy (Qi)
β€’ Explosive movements known as Fa Jin
β€’ Breathing coordination
β€’ Silk-reeling spiralling movements (Chan Si Jin)
β€’ Partner training and martial applications

These principles remain central to Chen Tai Chi today.
