Last week, along with 300+ people who are passionate about the wellness of others.
I attended the inaugural Australian and New Zealand Moral Injury Conference.
I’ve taken some time to let the learnings sink in as they were profound and relate to my journey and that of Well Beyond Service.
I gained many insights, here are a just a few.
💙Firstly to understand what Moral Injury (MI) is and how it has impacted so many of us in our service roles and indeed life. It is a human thing to care and have values.
💚An awareness that PTSD and MI treatments are different - you can have both of them at the same time or each one separately.
💙An insight that some treatments for PTSD can exacerbate an MI and prolong healing.
💚Understanding that there is no way to avoid MI on the job or in life- it’s about raising awareness and promoting ways to heal, recover and reconnect beyond the injury.
💙Exploring the different areas of brain activation of PTSD and MI, gaining an appreciation of how the different parts of your brain firing can lead to overwhelm, fatigue and stuckness.
💚Peer support, community based recovery is one of the useful treatments for MI and something we experience around our campfires by sharing, listening and validating others.
💙Knowing that we are on the right track for supporting wellness beyond our service roles by exploring identity, language for wellness and creating a safe space for people to simply be and heal.
The next conference is in Hobart in 2027.
Highly recommended for your personal/professional knowledge and anyone leading or supporting people.
The presenters were fantastic, there were resources galore and the amazing humans that shared their lived and professional experiences were next level🙌🏻
