💡Motivation Often Comes After Action
One of the biggest myths about motivation is that we need to feel motivated before we can get started.
In reality, motivation often follows action, not the other way around.
When we're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, low in mood, or simply exhausted, waiting for motivation to arrive can keep us trapped in a cycle of procrastination and self-criticism. We tell ourselves, "I'll do it when I feel more motivated," but that moment often never comes.
Instead taking even the smallest step, based simply on the CHOICE to do so, can begin to shift things.
A five-minute task. Sending one email. Walking to the letterbox. Opening the document you've been avoiding.
These small actions create momentum. They give your brain evidence that you can start, and often that tiny beginning makes the next step feel more manageable.
This approach is used in therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), where we focus on taking meaningful action even when motivation isn't present.
So today, ask yourself:
✨ What's one small thing you've been putting off?
Set a timer for five minutes and begin. You don't need to finish it. You just need to start.
Often, motivation is waiting on the other side of that first step.
