Tight hips or lack of hip mobility is something that is all too common. Is it the end of the world? No.

However when I hear about or I always make sure to take a look here as well. Because there are so many things that can affect how they function.

The key is working out the function your body needs, for what you need it to perform, without pain and discomfort in your day to day.

So I’m gonna explore the hips in the next few posts.

The weekend has come & gone.

You battled your way through the field/court. Your body is feeling the effects of the game. has set in, your feeling tight in your hammies - what do you do?

Well most ignore it, go to work and hope for the best next game. Otherwise the fumble through training, not addressing any of the aches and pains.

Why would we continually ignore the messages our body is sending us for what it needs. Then demand it to perform without adequate preparation?

Well through Treatments my goal is to assess things like Range of Motion, or muscle tone and help you achieve your desired outcome to support you to perform at your best.

Did you know that tingling in your fingers could be coming from all the way up at your neck?

It could be coming anywhere along a pathway of nerves. Thats why I like to not only look at your whole body rather than just the symptoms.

More importantly I ask a lot of questions because your answers give me a lot of information as to where I should start.

You'll find a common theme on this page. All things can help as much as they can hinder.

It all depends on your goals & desired outcomes.

The two main types of taping are RIGID & KINESIO.

RIGID is...well...rigid. So it's goal is to support & reduce movement in certain directions. This aims to reduce risk of injury by limiting a joints ability to reach a position where it may be unstable due to damaged tissue (Just one example).

KINESIO tape has a higher Elastane content (which is where my old fashion design life comes in handy) which means in won't provide anywhere near as much support & stability as the rigid tape.

There are mixed reviews on the efficacy of the tape. However it has been said to provide proprioceptive benefits (think mind-body connection) and also decompressive benefits (especially in the superficial layers of the skin).

So I can definitely look at what taping option may suit supporting your, but its good to remember that it is just a support. Our goal should be moving to be strong and confident enough in our body to perform without it unless we absolutely cant.

What's in a name?

I chose the name Haumanu Health as a nod to my New Zealand Māori & Sāmoan heritage.

Haumanu is a Māori word which as a:

- verb: to revive, restore to health, rejuvenate.

- modifier: therapeutic

- noun: therapy.

The symbol is of a Manta Ray with the recognisable NZ Fern. They are usually seen as guardians & also provide us with knowledge.

See I chose Haumanu because the words doesn't just relate to body work. It relates to Well-being in a wider scope. A scope of total well being.

Anyway, that is a bit of my story. Let me know a bit of yours by coming in for a visit - all my contact details are there (I even broke down the pronunciation to help you out when you call)

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

If you Google on the effectiveness of stretching & you will leave with more questions than when you went looking for something to help.

Long & Short of it team, is if it makes you feel good & causes not further pain or risk, then do it.

It depends what your goal is.

Would I suggest Passive Style stretching of muscles you need to be "exploding" & "Fast Twitching" before just before a game? Probably not. This style of passive stretching can have a 'nap time' affect on muscles.

Do you reckon that would support or hinder your objective?

We are all unique. You are unique. Your body & it's demands on it are unique. Thats how I like to approach my clients.

Our treatment time is one thing. Usually full of laughs, fun anecdotes & the odd expletive as I find those wonderful or tender muscles.

Education about what changes you can make after is the real gold. I believe the less I see you the better I'm doing (Makes sense right?)

I will always give a range of recommendations to you which may include:

- strengthening exercises
- co-ordination
- lifestyle considerations
- referral options
- stretching
- rolling
- mobility focussed work

This list is endless & varied - because each person is unique.

Then YES - Massage can help as part of increasing your range of motion. Many clients of mine also comment saying it helps them become more aware of the way their muscles move.
