Back to reality! 🌿
After a weekend in the Adelaide Hills, I’m refocusing on training with for my next adventure.
As a nutritionist, I practice what I preach: prep, fuel and be accountable.
Pre-training muffins are part of the prep - although I still managed to forget something! 😂
Good nutrition isn’t just for athletes; it’s for anyone wanting to feel their best - whether that’s more energy, better sleep, supporting hormones and gut health, or simply looking after your health.

Let’s work together to support your health and lifestyle goals.

Hot flushes driving you mad? 🔥

Menopause can sometimes feel like your body has its own agenda and you're no longer in the driver's seat.

I like to look beyond Australia for information too, and recently came across an interesting discussion on a German podcast about new non-hormonal medications for menopausal symptoms.
These medications work on the brain's "thermostat" to reduce hot flushes and night sweats. Both are now TGA-approved in Australia, offering another option for women who can't or don't want to use MHT.

It got me looking more closely at how these medications work - and where nutrition fits in.

Nutrition can't replicate their action, but it can support your health through menopause and may help reduce symptoms, either alongside medication or on its own.

🌿 Mediterranean-style, plant-forward eating 🥢 Whole soy foods ⚖️ Healthy weight where appropriate 🐟 Oily fish, olive oil and nuts 🚫 Limiting alcohol, excess caffeine and spicy foods 🦠 Gut health and targeted probiotics.

Let’s get you back into the drivers seat so that you feel more in control of your body again - with nutrition working alongside your GP or specialist where needed.

A few days out from your big trail race? Excited? Nervous? Itching to go with all that extra taper time?

Now is the time to relax and get ready: nothing new, trust your prep.

The days before - fill your body's energy stores. Pasta, rice, potatoes, oats, fruit, juice. Keep fibre lower and choose easy-to-digest options.

Race morning - top it up with a familiar, carb-rich breakfast. Start well hydrated. Caffeine only if you know it suits you on race day.

During the race - fuel from the start, don't wait until you're hungry. Forward fuelling keeps you running strong, delays exhaustion and helps prevent cramps. Gels, chews, food, drinks - whatever you've practised. A watch timer helps if you tend to forget. Drink fluids regularly and include sodium, especially in longer or hotter races. And don't forget your cup or soft flask for the aid stations.

For women - and especially women in midlife - listen to what works for you. Race week is not the time to cut back. Consistent fuel supports your bones, hormones and recovery.

Trust yourself. Enjoy the day.

What are you racing this weekend? I’d love to hear how you’re going. 🏃‍♀️🏃🌄

Probiotics - not always a sexy topic, but this one is worth a look.
A few months ago, I was at a metabolic conference in Austria, learning about the European approach to gut health.

Now, Australia has caught up.

Akkermansia muciniphila - a next-generation probiotic - has been permitted within the TGA framework and products are now appearing on the Australian market.

Unlike traditional probiotics (which work inside the gut), Akkermansia works ON the gut wall - rebuilding the mucus barrier itself.

Who might this be relevant for?

* Mid-life women - hormonal shifts can affect gut barrier integrity, and this may offer a different angle beyond fibre and low-FODMAP
* Athletes and active people - stress, travel and training intensity affect the mucus layer in ways standard probiotics don't fully address
* If you have taken a course of antibiotics recently, or if your gut just seems to react to everything - this is a different approach to something we have not had easy access here

Not a magic bullet, and suitability is individual. But if any of this resonates, send me a message - happy to talk it through.

One comment during my recent talk about nutrition for trail running and ultra racing really stuck with me. Someone said, “After a big day on the trail, I love a burger,” with a little laugh, as if admitting to a guilty pleasure.

You know what? Me too! 😄

My job as a nutritionist is to help you get the best possible nutrition for your current situation.
And guess what? After finishing a big race or hike, a burger might be just the right thing for you.

Firstly, you just did a massive thing. Eat!

Secondly, a burger is actually a pretty good recovery meal: carbs + protein. Add some chips and salt generously, to help replenish sodium, have a large glass of water with electrolytes, and enjoy! And if you fancy some pickles or beetroot, throw them in too - a little something for your gut bugs while you’re at it. 😉

Recovery isn’t just about the nutrients your body needs. Food also supports your mental wellbeing. A big day out is super fun, but it’s still a stressor - albeit a good one.

So don’t worry about that burger. And don’t start thinking about extending your fasting window to “support fat burning” or whatever the latest social media trend is.

You can think about the latest food trends the other 364 days of the year.

For today, follow your gut instinct - literally - and eat!

Replenish your body. Sit down with the people you love. Celebrate what you’ve achieved. Eat well, hydrate and sleep.

Have a fab race! 🏃‍♀️

(If after your race you feel off - dizzy, confused, or your p*e is very dark - get checked. Otherwise? Celebrate!)

Looking forward to joining the team at for their Coastal High Trail Running Info Night, alongside some other great speakers. We’ll be chatting about Coastal High and trail running in general, with plenty of practical tips for getting out there.
