Does doing nothing need an excuse?

Yesterday I caught myself filling a spare moment with work.

Today’s cartoon takes that thought a little further.

If someone asks, “What are you doing?” could I comfortably say, “Nothing”?

Or would I need to explain:
“I’ve already done a few things.”
“I’m just having a quick coffee.”
“I’ll get back to it shortly.”

As though a quiet moment needs a good reason.

I’m not calling it bad. I enjoy my work.

But I’m curious about the difference between choosing to do something and feeling I should always be doing something.

Perhaps the Always-On Problem can look like this: even when we stop, we’re still explaining, planning or preparing.

No rule to follow. Nothing to get right.

Just a question:

When you have a little space, what do you notice—the space itself, or the urge to fill it? 🤔

It’s a beautiful Saturday morning on the Gold Coast.

Karin’s gone to the gym. I’ve been to the shops to pick up a few things we’d run out of for breakfast.

Now I’m home, having a coffee and waiting for her to return.

And I’m back into work.

A little gap in the morning—and I’ve filled it.

Nothing wrong with enjoying your work. But it’s made me wonder how often I do this by choice, and how often it’s simply become my default.

Do I want to get something done—or do I find it hard to leave a little time unfilled?

This is the sort of everyday moment that makes me think about the Always-On Problem.

It doesn’t always look like a frantic day. Sometimes it looks like a coffee on a sunny Saturday, with your mind already back at work.

Anyone else recognise themselves in this? 🤔

You’ve stopped. But you’re still on.

You’re sitting down, but planning tomorrow.
You’re with someone you love, but part of your attention is elsewhere.
Nobody needs you right now, but you’re still ready to respond.

And perhaps it has become so normal that you hardly notice it anymore.

At Vital Recalibration, we call this the Always-On Problem.

A person can stop working, sit down or take time away—and still feel responsible, alert and mentally available to everyone else.

I recognise it because I spent years living it. It’s why I created Vital.

This evening, just notice:

When you sit down, do you feel off duty—or still on call? 🤔

The working day has finished.

But are you still answering questions in your head?
Thinking about tomorrow?
Feeling available to everyone else?

You’ve stopped. But you’re still on.

At Vital Recalibration, we call this the Always-On Problem.

We offer a protected Window—time away from interruptions, with nothing you need to manage or achieve.

Space to simply be.
And notice what you notice.

If this feels familiar—or you recognise it in the people you work with—I’d welcome a conversation.
