You’ve probably heard us talk about our Allied Health Assistants (AHAs) - but what exactly do they do? 🤔

AHAs work alongside our Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists and Physiotherapists to help participants practise and reinforce therapy strategies recommended by their treating therapist.

Under therapist direction, an AHA session might involve:

🌿 practising everyday routines and independence skills
💬 working on communication activities
✋ building fine motor skills
🏃 practising movement and mobility exercises
🧠 reinforcing regulation strategies
🎯 repeating activities to build confidence and consistency

The therapist remains responsible for assessing, setting goals and developing the therapy plan, while the AHA helps bring that plan into action through structured, practical sessions.

For some participants, having an AHA as part of their therapy team can provide valuable opportunities for regular practice between therapist sessions - helping skills become more familiar and easier to use in everyday life.

It’s collaborative care with everyone working towards the same goal: meaningful progress for the participant. ✨

Sometimes therapy looks like searching for LEGO pieces hidden in putty. Sometimes it looks like bubbles, water and play. But behind every activity, there’s a therapeutic purpose 🌿

✋ TheraPutty Play - searching for hidden LEGO pieces in TheraPutty can help develop:
• hand and finger strength
• fine motor skills
• visual-motor integration
• concentration and problem-solving

These skills can support everyday activities such as handwriting, craft, using a keyboard, tying shoelaces, doing up buttons and other self-care tasks.

💧 Sensory Water Play - blowing bubbles through a straw and using water droppers creates a fun sensory experience while supporting:
• sensory awareness and regulation
• controlled breathing
• oral motor skills
• fine motor control
• hand and finger strength

Activities like these keep therapy engaging while giving participants opportunities to practise skills that can carry over into everyday life 💜

Because therapy doesn’t always have to look like therapy to be working towards meaningful goals.

It might look like we’re just playing… but there’s often a whole lot of therapy happening behind the scenes! 🎲✨

Play and games give therapists opportunities to work towards important everyday skills in a way that feels natural, motivating and engaging.

In this activity, we’re working on:

👄 Bringing attention to the mouth and how sounds and words are formed
🗣️ CVC words - simple three-letter words that follow a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, like cat, dog or sit
💬 Initiating interaction and conversation
🤝 Social skills including interacting with others and taking turns
🧠 Cognitive flexibility and adapting when things don’t go as expected
🌿 Sensory processing
💜 Emotional regulation
👥 Conversation skills including listening and taking turns speaking

The best part? These skills are being practised while the participant is engaged, interacting and having fun.

Because at HEEA, play has a purpose. 💜

Friday Focus 💜✨

This week’s tip: Give the brain time to reset.

Taking a break doesn’t mean learning has stopped. Short movement or rest breaks can help with attention, processing and returning to a task feeling ready to go again.

Try this: If concentration starts to fade, take a quick 2–3 minute reset. Stretch, grab a drink of water, or step outside for a short walk🚶💧

Then come back and try again.

Sometimes a little reset is exactly what the brain needs

Speech Pathology Week – Possibility to Grow 🌱💜

Growth can look different for everyone - a new word, speaking up with confidence, trying a new communication strategy, or becoming more independent in everyday life.

🌱 Speech pathologists support growth by helping people develop communication skills that build confidence and independence over time.

Every new skill, every attempt, and every step forward is worth celebrating.
