Mikao Usui, the founder of the practice commonly called Reiki, referred to his ‘Reiki Ryoho’ as ‘the secret method of inviting happiness’. The secret was never a secret, simply hidden in plain sight, revealed in ‘the Now’ that is the foundation of his system of practice.

The Now is alive in the presence of treatment practice. Alive in the precepts as instructions for being ‘in the now moment’. The now is the environment of the second degree practice that connects with the non physical reality that exists beyond the five physical senses.

Phyllis Furumoto used the term ‘Mystic Order’ to give a name an to an aspect of the form of practice that she received from her teacher Hawayo Takata. Our physically based lived experience of the practice is the three aspects she called Healing Practice, Spiritual Discipline and Self Development.

Mystical Order, when viewed from these known physical life experiences may seem mysterious, even unknowable. Mikao Usui described the true purpose of his way as correcting the ‘heart-mind’. ‘Heart-mind’ is neither heart nor mind. The concept is of a third ‘place’ that is a synthesis of heart and mind.

The correction of the heart-mind is a mind shift directly into the experience of Mystic Order. From this totally novel and new vantage point, the nature of the practice and its opening into the knowing of who and what we truly are is revealed.

This is ‘The Secret Method’.

The science of Quantum Physics, with its concepts of a quantum field that is consciousness itself is the science. Everything that is, is in the quantum field, and the quantum field is in everything.

Hawayo Takata. who introduced the practice to the western world. spoke of Reiki as ‘God power’, writing ‘Reiki is a force beyond the comprehension of man.’

And then, people squished that incomprehensible Force into a tiny box their minds could hold, made it into a universal energy that can used and done, and sent, made the practice into a modality.

Phyllis Furumoto, who was Takata’s successor in her lineage, spoke of Usui’s System of practice as ‘a system of human development’ and hands-on treatments as the practice of that system.

The hands-on treatment practice has a very useful and attractive side effect broadly labelled ‘healing’. Almost unspoken is hands-on treatment in the role of a practice of stillness and presence. This aspect of the treatment practice is alive in the space of the Now, the same ‘Now’ held in the words of the precepts, holding the possibility of a direct knowing and experience of a field of consciousness which Mikao Usui called “Reiki’.

The practice reveals the truth of who and what we truly are.
