🏃‍♂️💨 Flyball dogs are explosive athletes.

Speed, power, agility, and body awareness all come together in a matter of seconds as they race down the lane, perform a tight box turn, and sprint back to their handler.

As a canine physiotherapist, I love incorporating exercises that help build the strength and mobility needed for the demands of flyball. Here are a few of my favourites:

🔹 Trot poles – Great for developing coordination, body awareness, and hindlimb power.

🔹 Decline sit-to-stands – A fantastic exercise for building strength through the hindquarters and improving pushing power.

🔹 Three-leg stand with front paws on a balance disc – Challenges shoulder stability, core control, and spinal mobility while encouraging weight shifting.

🔹 Side stepping – Helps strengthen the muscles responsible for lateral movement and stability, which are essential during turns and acceleration.

Remember, training isn’t just about practising the sport itself. Building a strong, resilient body can help your dog perform at their best and cope with the physical demands of competition.

Which of these exercises does your flyball dog already do?

Thanks .lottie for the great pictures!

Had a fantastic time speaking at KCC Park to the members of about all things canine strength, conditioning, and injury prevention 🐾 ✨

Thank you to everyone who attended, asked thoughtful questions, and shared their experiences. It’s always rewarding to help handlers better understand how to keep their dogs strong, healthy, and performing at their best.

Looking forward to seeing these owners put their new knowledge into action 🔥

Elbow dysplasia can make everyday movement uncomfortable for dogs, but the right exercises can help improve strength, stability and mobility 🐾💪

Here are 4 physio exercises I commonly use to support dogs with elbow dysplasia and help keep them moving comfortably. Remember: every dog is different, so exercises should always be tailored to their individual needs and stage of disease.

✨ Slow and controlled movement
✨ Focus on strength + stability
✨ Keep sessions short and positive

If your dog is struggling with stiffness, limping or reduced mobility, canine physiotherapy can help 🐶

What does canine physio actually involve? Let me show you the exercise component. 🐾

Every exercise in a physio consult is chosen for a reason; whether that’s improving strength, balance, body awareness, mobility, coordination, or helping your dog move more comfortably and confidently.

There’s no “one rehab plan fits all.”
What one dog needs after injury, surgery, or performance work can look completely different to another.

The exercise component helps us:
• Target weaknesses and compensation patterns
• Improve movement quality
• Build strength safely
• Support recovery and long-term function
• Help active and sporting dogs perform at their best

And yes… sometimes the simple exercises are the most effective. 👏

Check out this muscle gain 🔥💪🏻

“Just because imaging is clear doesn’t mean your dog isn’t struggling.” 🐾🩻

This little sausage dog came to physio hopping intermittently, despite CT scans clearing the back, hips and stifles. What we did find was significant hypermobility, meaning the joints had excessive movement and poor stability.

Hypermobility can place ongoing stress through the body and may contribute to:
• Chronic pain and discomfort
• Muscle tension and compensation
• Joint instability
• Reduced confidence in movement
• Altered gait patterns like hopping

The photo on the left was at the start of rehab.
The photo on the right is the 6-month outcome after the owners committed fully to the rehabilitation plan at home and hydrotherapy at 💦🐾

Through targeted strengthening, stability work, body awareness exercises and consistency, we were able to build better support around those mobile joints and improve overall function and comfort.

A reminder that rehab is rarely an overnight fix — but with the right plan and dedicated owners, the changes can be incredible 💙

IVDD can feel overwhelming for owners but understanding the condition is the first step toward helping your dog recover 🐾

From pain and weakness to wobbliness and coordination changes, IVDD affects every dog differently. Early intervention, appropriate rest, and tailored rehabilitation can make a huge difference in recovery and quality of life. 💛

My goal is to help dogs regain strength, confidence, mobility, and function safely through every stage of recovery.

If your dog is showing signs of back pain or weakness, don’t ignore it — early assessment is important.

Exciting news! 🎉

I’m officially an Antinol Allied Therapist Professional Partner 🐾💚

As a canine physiotherapist, I’m always looking for evidence-based ways to help dogs move better, feel better, and stay active for longer! And thats exactly why I use Antinol with my own dogs and recommend it to my clients!

Antinol is a natural marine lipid supplement that supports:
✨ Joint health
✨ Mobility and flexibility
✨ Reduction in inflammation
✨ Recovery after injury or surgery
✨ Comfort in ageing or arthritic dogs
✨ Performance and recovery in sporting dogs

From a physiotherapy perspective, reducing inflammation and improving comfort can help dogs move more freely, engage better in their rehab exercises, and maintain muscle strength and mobility. I often recommend it alongside physiotherapy and conditioning programs to support overall joint and musculoskeletal health.

The paw replacement test helps assess proprioception — your dog’s awareness of where their limbs are in space.

A normal response is for the paw to immediately return to the correct position. A delayed or absent response may indicate neurological dysfunction affecting the spinal cord, nerves, or brain.

Subtle signs like toe dragging, stumbling, scuffing nails, or delayed paw placement shouldn’t be ignored.

If this is your dog and you haven’t seen a professional then please do.

Lateral step ups, step downs, and step overs are great exercises for improving strength, coordination, balance, and body awareness 🐕💪

These exercises challenge controlled loading through each leg while targeting important stabilising muscles used in everyday movement, sport, and rehabilitation.

The goal isn’t speed — it’s slow, controlled, quality movement 👌

These can be a great addition to conditioning programs, injury prevention, or rehab plans when tailored appropriately to your dog.

TPLO surgery is just step one.
Rehab is where the outcome is made. 🐾💪🏻

What I see most often?
➡️ Too much too soon
➡️ Or not enough targeted rehab

Both can delay recovery.

The goal isn’t just healing, it’s restoring strength, movement, and confidence in that limb, so your dog can get back to full exercise.

If your dog has had a TPLO what rehab are you doing? Drop a message below if you need a structured plan 👇🏻
