I’ve yet to meet a family who found the aged care system straightforward.

The process can feel like:
– unclear pathways
– long wait times
– confusing terminology
– mixed advice

It’s not that the system doesn’t work.
It’s that it’s hard to navigate without context.

Once families understand:
– what stage they’re at
– what comes next
– what actually matters

Everything becomes much more manageable.

We help families make the right choices and avoid the pitfalls or mistakes such as choosing the wrong care pathway, entering residential care prematurely, misunderstanding fee structures, engaging in unnecessary family conflict, rushed or crisis driven decisions & emotional burnout.

Great segment on 10 News+ last night. A key quote I captured at the end:

“The advice is talk, plan, and face reality....we don’t have these conversations early enough. We wait until we are in crisis, perhaps at our most vulnerable, and then we try to navigate a system that should be easy to navigate, but at the moment, is not”

Aged care decisions are rarely just practical.

They’re emotional.

One sibling wants to move quickly.
Another wants to wait.
Someone is worried about money.
Someone feels guilty.

And the parent often has their own strong views.

What looks like “indecision” is usually:

Unspoken concerns + lack of structure.

When families get clear on:
– priorities
– risks
– realistic options

The decision becomes much easier.

Senior Australians have been waiting for a change in policy to help them access the care they need. The federal budget will take them halfway there.

One of the most common questions I hear:

“Should Mum move to a retirement village now — or stay at home longer?”

It’s not a simple lifestyle decision.

It’s a timing decision.

Move too early:

– unnecessary disruption

– financial impact

– emotional resistance

Move too late:

– crisis decisions

– limited options

– added stress

There’s rarely a perfect answer.

But there is usually a well-considered pathway.

That’s what most families are really looking for.

The biggest mistake I see families make in aged care decisions?

They move too quickly.

Often under pressure:
– a hospital discharge
– a fall
– advice from well-meaning professionals
– fear of “getting it wrong”

So they choose the first “safe” option.

Sometimes that means entering residential care earlier than necessary.
Sometimes it means missing viable options at home.

Clarity matters more than speed.
Aged care decisions are rarely urgent in the way they feel.
They’re just unfamiliar.

If you, or someone you know, needs a hand navigating and understanding where to start, please pass on my details.

Another wonderful testimonial just received today. Thanks Sophie!

“Matthew Cragg at Candid Coaching was kind, approachable, and genuinely relatable, making it a very comfortable process to discuss our family’s needs while assessing suitable housing options for my father. He was prompt in responding to my queries and generous with his expert advice, including using his industry knowledge to support a quick yet thorough review process. Thanks to Matthew’s support, we have now found a suitable option for my father with Resthaven, and we are very grateful for how seamless he made the experience. We will continue to use his services in the future as needed”
