Did you know, a few years ago the understanding of blocked ducts and mastitis changed and so did the recommendations for prevention and management?!
Natural instinct is often to massage out the "plug" when, on the contrary, this can often cause more inflammation and make things worse!
If you suspect a blocked duct, our top tips are:
1. use cool packs intermittently.
2. use an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen.
3. Avoid deep massage toward the ni**le, use flat-handed gentle lymphatic drainage massage away from ni**le, toward the armpit.
4. avoid over-emptying and excessive pumping - this can up-regulate your supply and add to the problem! Feed as normal, express small amounts for comfort if needed.
5. Consider ultrasound therapy with an experienced physiotherapist.
6. Seek help early - contact your midwife, Lactation Consultant, GP or Obstetrician if symptoms persist or don't resolve after 12-24 hours.
Handy hint! Our Lactation Consultants at MilkyBubs are Endorsed Midwives! What does this mean? This means they have the ability to order pathology tests, prescribe medications (such as antibiotics) and offer Medicare rebates to eligible pregnant, postpartum and lactating women.
