Recently I was awarded the 2024 Rosemary Bryant Award for my extensive body of work with people with diabetes, those with intellectual disability and services to address the needs of people with a disability. It was a very exciting moment for me and such an acknowledgement of the immense impact Sarah had on my career. She taught me so much and it has been wonderful to be able to share those lessons in a tangible way that improves the health and quality of life of the people with a disability with whom I work. Big thank you to the Australian APNA - Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association for bestowing such an amazing honour on me and my work. The Award is a piece of glass art inspired by APNA's logo ... which I was told was inspired by my love of glass as well. Could I feel anymore acknowledged?!

Many people with cognitive disability end up with more advanced health conditions at diagnosis, because of memory and communication challenges.

EdHealth Australia works with NDIS participants to design resources to fill this gap in health monitoring. Know a NDIS participant who would benefit from this and EdHealth's other services? Get in touch or tell their Support Coordinator about our service. It's time to support health equity for people with intellectual disability.

Australians with intellectual disability are at a disadvantage when it comes to receiving quality healthcare. This significantly compromises their health as well as their quality and length of life. The Australian Government is making it easier for all Australians with an intellectual disability to have a yearly comprehensive health assessment by their general practitioner (GP) by making the Comprehensive Health Assessment Program (CHAP) tool available online for free. This evidence based resource has been shown to make a significant difference to the health of people with intellectual disability.

This resource consists of two sections, with Section 1 completed by the person with intellectual disability and their circle of support before meeting with their GP for a long appointment. The doctor may enlist the assistance of their primary care nurse/s to help with the process as well.

To find out more click on the link below ... the information will be of interest to people working in both the disability support and health sectors, and people with a family member with an intellectual disability
