This week's awe lens is sound, so here's today's challenge: find a quiet moment somewhere today and just listen for the furthest sound you can pick out, not the nearest one. A dog a few streets over, a plane you can't see, wind moving through something far away. See how far your ears can actually reach if you give them the chance.

I watched this footage of rain landing on a still pond and could see each ripple spread out until it disappeared into the next one. There's something about watching that rhythm, drop after drop, that almost makes you want to just sit and count them.

Have you ever caught yourself getting pulled into something that repetitive, in a good way?

There's this study I keep thinking about. Researchers took military veterans and young people from underserved communities on a whitewater rafting trip and measured how much awe they felt along the way, on top of every other positive emotion in the mix.

The people who felt more awe showed bigger drops in stress and PTSD symptoms a week later, and awe was the only feeling that actually predicted it, not just enjoying the trip in general.

They found something similar with university students and their everyday nature time too. Which tracks, honestly, because that's kind of the whole premise of this account.

Not everything extraordinary is loud. Sometimes it's just quiet enough that you have to actually listen for it, which is probably why it's so easy to miss. That's kind of the whole point of this account, if I'm honest.

On this particular walk, Bella kept stopping to watch the movement in the trees - she does this a lot, actually, just stands there watching, like it’s the most interesting thing in the world. Can you spot the bird house?

There's something about pine that does this to people, one breath of it and you're somewhere else entirely, some other year, some other version of a place you used to know…
Ever had a smell do that to you, pull up a whole memory before you even placed it?

What's something you've heard or seen so many times that you've basically stopped registering it?

I think about this a lot, how easy it is for something to go from noticeable to background noise just because it's familiar. Sometimes it takes an old video, or someone else pointing it out, before you actually notice it again.

What's yours?

This week's awe lens is movement, so here's today's challenge: find one thing that's moving today that you're not the one controlling, like wind in a branch or clouds shifting overhead, and just watch it for ten seconds before you look away.

That's genuinely it. See what happens if you actually give it the full ten seconds instead of just registering it and moving on.

I watched this clip of grass swaying in the breeze for way longer than I meant to. There's something mesmerising in watching movement that isn't headed anywhere in particular... Have you ever let yourself just watch something like that, without needing it to lead to anything?
