Frontline Lessons in Support Work #1
The Power of Redirection
At Heed & Brim Care Services, through our work alongside participants with complex behaviours, one approach continues to stand out: the power of redirection.
Across both frontline support and behaviour support practice, we have seen how simple, well-timed strategies can create meaningful change.
We often refer to redirection as an “over-the-counter strategy”, not because it is basic, but because of its accessibility and effectiveness when applied with understanding. Redirection is not about stopping behaviour.
It is about shifting attention in a respectful and supportive way.
Many participants are not seeking control , they are seeking guidance, safety, and connection in the moment.
And this begins with presence.
At Heed & Brim, we emphasize engaging the senses as part of effective redirection:
• What the participant can see
• What they can hear
• What they can touch
A simple sensory shift can interrupt escalation and support regulation , especially when a participant is approaching meltdown. However, what makes redirection truly effective is not the technique itself, it is the understanding behind it.
Redirection works best when it is:
• Personal
• Intentional
• Grounded in the participant’s interests and preferences
This is the foundation of our person-centered support.
At Heed & Brim Care Services, we believe that the most effective strategies are not always the most complex rather they are the ones that allow us to connect, understand, and respond in real time. Because real support is not just delivered it is experienced.
As providers and practitioners, what redirection strategies have you found most effective in your practice?
