Now, more than ever, amongst the uncertainty of life with COVID-19, we need to be looking after ourselves!
Time to focus on our own immune system and work on strengthening that, so if anything comes along, we’ve got fighting chance to beat it.
GUT HEALTH is a really great place to start!
What I’ve learnt recently is how important our gut health is and how intertwined it is with our immune system.
Immune systems are quite complex, but in a simplified understanding its split into 2
- Innate Immunity: The 1st line of defence where it reacts, this occurs almost immediately and up to 96 hours after
- Adaptive Immunity: Is more specifically acquired and complex. This develops our own natural antibodies and long-term benefits
Research has found that 70-80% of our immune system is in our gut.
The bacterial diversity also impacts inflammation within the body.
Ever heard of the saying that “disease starts in the gut?”
Today (generally speaking), unfortunately the diets that we’ve become accustomed to are ones based around highly processed and packaged foods
Not to mention the over consumption of sugar, alcohol… (guilty) and GMO foods.
Although on one had I can completely understand how this has come about, it doesn’t take away the fact that there are many negative side effects for us!
The scary thing is that we cannot actually see what is happening inside us from day to day.
Gut health is pretty important when it comes to building a strong immunity!
The exciting thing is that we have so many incredible options to be able to help re-build!
- Eat well, eat REAL FOOD
Whatever diet that aligns with your body
Avoid processed/packaged foods, sugar and bad vegetable oils
- Introduce amazing products like Bone broth. This helps to rebuild your gut lining and to absorb nutrients properly
- Eat fermented foods like Sauerkraut, Kimchi, Miso and cultured yoghurts for your prebiotics!
- Lots of filtered water to help flush any toxins
- Sleep! Don’t burn yourself out, that creates a whole other issue
If you’re someone who is actually suffering in any way with any gut issues, I definitely urge you to seek medical advice. Prevention is key!
Much love,
Georgia
